Ok bought a bottle of STP gas treatment and put in the gas tank. Saw it in the store and it seemed like a good idea. I have been known to put in some stp fuel injector cleaner in the gas tank too. Am I being ripped off or does this stuff really do anything for the life of the motor.

Like the previous poster said, it won't do anything for the life of the engine. But it can help keep your fuel system cleaner, which can equate to longer life of those parts.

I only run Chevron gas and I use a bottle of Techron at every oil change. I do this because a trusted mechanic suggested it to me a while back when I used to have a Toyota Tercel. He had to blast my intake valves with crushed walnut shells to get all the garbage off of them that had built up over 65,000 miles of cheap gas...the garbage on the valves was causing stumbling, loss of power, the engine would die every now and then, and my gas mileage was dropping. $300 for that job. 1 container of techron (up to $7) every 3000 miles for that same number of miles is just over $150. Money and hassle saved by running techron through the system at every oil change.

I've never had a problem since I switched to using the techron now and then. But if you have a thing against Chevron products, I'd guess that any reputable fuel system cleaner would do about the same. And no, I don't own Chevron stock, so buy what you want.

My favorite is STP concentrated gas treatment (black bottle). I had a '92 5.2 Dak that I ran up to 217,000 miles on the original injectors. The fuel system was still flawless. I used one bottle about every 8000 miles. The best test of this stuff is my wife's Mazda Millenia. When it doesn't start as quick, or hesitates slightly, one bottle makes it run like a sewing machine.

i had a VW and every year just before winter, it ran like crap, stumbled, idled rough. Put in a bottle of gas treatment and it ran fine. I figured it was condensation. Had another VW with pinhole leaks in the bottom of the gas tank just below the pick up tube. rusted out because of water in the tank. I took the tank out and a friend soldered it. he did it for a six pack of Bud.

I do believe you can get water condensation in the gas tank.
