Message: My apologies for being slightly off-topic, but you guys appear to know what your talking about. With that said, I have a 99 Dak, 2WD, CC, V6 with an 'open diff'. I say open diff because the only way I could tell was to turn one of my rear wheels while the truck was on a lift. As I turned the rear wheel, the other wheel turn in the opposite direction.
Being I live in New England, if I had the money I would have got the a 4wd....but....no money = 2wd open diff :-)
Before this winter hits, I want to switch to a limited-slip. I know absolutely squat about this topic, so I'm curious if the fact I have a 2WD as opposed to a 4WD makes a difference here?
mpil1 got the Dana Trac-Loc installed for $190 + installation. Is that all I need to do to get the rear changed to a limited slip? What about the gear ratio? Do I assume it will be the 3.92? I'm not even sure what does and what doesn't get replaced, but bear in mind I have 80K miles on this truck. Honestly I don't know what gears I have now as the tag on the casing broke off...but if one of you is Vin # savy, here's the #:
1B7GL22X2XS244405
Lastly, based on Funkycheese's comment, all I need to provide to a shop is the axle size and "Dana Trac-Lock". How do I find out what the axle size is?
I appreciate the help
TIA
Kevin

Message: All I had they needed to know from me was what I wanted (limited slip rear end,) axle size (mine's Chrysler 8.25",) and gear ratio (mine's 3.55.) Check inside your glove compartment, there might be a tag in there that indicates your gear ratio.

Does this install include the gears?? In other words, If I specify that I want to have the 3.92 regardless whether or not I do (No info in my glove box, and the axle tag broke off), can they simply give me the new ratio? Or is that a different job? Bear in mind I don't know anything about what they are replacing and what will remain from the original setup.

Message: Nope, gears and lim slip would be two different things. You'd need a lim slip carrier and new ring and pinion for gears. If you do get new gear ratio, most people around here will suggest the 3.92's. You'll certainly notice a difference in power compared to 3.21's.

Message: Considering there is supposed to be a good bit of performance increase when going from a 3.55 to a 3.92....I can't wait to see what I'll get!
I need help however getting a "parts list" so I can order what I need before getting the work done. Here's what I have so far:
1. Dana Trac-Loc for a Chrystler 8.2" axle with a 3.92 axle ratio (can I be sure there is such a thing...considering mine is only a 3.21?
2. Limited Slip carrier (?? Don't know what that is or how to order one?)
3. New ring and pinion for 3.92 gears?
Are there KITS I can buy?
Thanks again mpil1, you've been alotta help

Message: the carrier is the "limited slip" part. And the ring and pinion are the "gears" part. Should be all you need. Yes, Dana does make a trac-loc for Chrylser 8.25" w/ 3.92 gears. If you're chainging gears to 3.92 then you certainly want to get the lim-slip for 3.92 ratio. Best thing is to go to a 4x4 shop and say, "this is what I have..... and this is what I want it to be....." They'll tell you the parts you need. Thats all I did. Also, keep in mind there are other differential manufacturers out there. Auburn gear is another that I've heard good things about. Do some searches on this site for limited slip differentials and you'll get lots of info.

Message: Personally I would not get the factory limited slip. The have clutches that wear out, and you have to run a specail differential fluid because of the clutches. If you want a limited slip try the detroit true trac or an eaton one.
I have a detroit ez locker, basically like a lockright. It is fine it only takes about a day to figure out what makes it lock up and when it could do it.
On the subject of gears. Call randy's ring and pinion, not my favorite place, or do a search online. make sure the gears you buy are not import ones. Yukon gears are very good. Just make sure you dont buy value ones. Also you will need a master install kit with the ring and pinion purchase.
Something else to consider would be looking at the Jeep boards. The XJ's come with either a dana 35 or 8.25" rear end. I think, not sure, but I think you could take a rear end from one of those and put under the dakota. You would have to swap the dakotas axle shafts out with the Jeeps so you could get the right wheel pattern. Again I'm not for sure on that but I'm researching it.

Message: Probably around 250 or so for gears with master install kit. Lockers range from $250-550 depending on what you want. Probably figure about 200-300 for labor.

Message: HELP!!! I'm replacing my oppn diff. wiht a powertrax locker, but before I do that, I want o inspect all my bearings (pinion and innner bearings). But the trouble that I'm having is getting my carrier out. I have the brackets removed, but yet I can not get it to free up. I'tll move a little bit, but that's about it. I do htave the pinion gear loose also. Please, I'm desperate. I've had my truck on blocks since middle of Sept. 2003 and it's already Jan. 2004. I want my truck back! If anyone can help me out, that would be great. The chilton book that I have is only for 2000 and I have a 01' Dak with a 9.25 rear end and 4X4. with the 4.7 V8. The book has helped me out most of the way, but it does not have the proper procedure for removing the carrier. Thanx.

Message: Hello all!
My LSD is driving me crazy. As you all know Dakota V8 trucks can break the tires loose easily which lead to the previous owner of my truck chipping all my spider gears from doing donuts on pavement. So far I can not find new spider gears for a 8.25 LSD anywhere..lots for open diffs though...help!!!!

Message: I had the same problem a few years ago. Solution: under $500 later, I installed the Powertrax no-slip diff into my rear [axle]. The only downside can be faster wear on tires, but having got 25,000+ out of my firestone destination LE's it's a very small problem to live with.
