Subject: Transmission squeaks! IP: Logged
Message: I'm getting a really weird noise from my transmission that squeaks up to about 3-4 MPH then goes away. It seems louder in reverse the forwards. And it only happens if the tranny is engaged (stick shift). Free rolling there is no sound.
The noise is similar to the sound that rubber against metal would make. I've taken a look at my tranny, but I don't see anything unusual. Anyone have any ideas?
It does not seem like a threating noise as if something is going to self destruct, but for a 3 year old truck (2000 4x4) I wouldn't expect any noise.

Message: I know this will sound stupid but ... Lube the
front and rear u-joint seals (just spray the
whole joint) with a good quality silicone spray
(Amsoil has a real good silicone spray).
I had a non-serviceable SPICER u-joint that had a
seal squeak and this solved the problem.
If this does not do the trick then check the
transmission rear seal for hardening and replace
if necessary.

Message: I don't think the squeel is coming from the u-joints only because if I push the clutch in and disengage the transmission and just coast, the noise stops. It is possible that the noise only happens when there is a load on the ujoints, but my gut is telling me the problem is at the tranny. Although I will try the silicone, you never know.
