Subject: Tubesand for traction IP: Logged
Message: Anyone ever used this product Tubesand from Quikrete for extra traction?
Tube-shaped bag fits along side rear axle, above wheel wells or in bed of pick up trucks.

Message: The first winter after I got my R/T...I got 8 bags of this and still got stuck in a Wendy's parking lot just a stone's throw away from my house. Even moving all 8 over one wheelwell did not aid in traction for me. I finally got out after 30 minutes by backing myself up about 10 feet to get more of a running start(several times doing this).
The moral of the story is: Depending on your weather conditions...you would be better off with either snow tires or some chains. I now have both and will not do the weight thing again.

Message: ME 111, I don't see how you got stuck with 8 bags of this stuff. In Wendy's parking not no less. Hehe, maybe it's just the R/Ts, because my 2WD goes lots of places it really shouldn't.

Message: I put 3- 70 lb bags in my truck over the axle. I did the same when I had my 2 WD truck too. I have never gotten stuck in snow in either truck. Yeah, a couple of close calls but nothing I couldn't get myself out of. I've gone through high drifts, you name it. Plan ahead (I have an Army folding shovel in the truck just in case) and remember, momentum in the right situation can mean more than all the torque in the world.
I don't pretend to be an expert, but my '96 extended cab Dak and now the '02 Quad cab have thoroughly distinguished themselves (with weight in the back ; ) ) as good winter drivers. ; )

Message: I just picked up 4 bags at Home Depot. 4 bags fit perfectly across the back between the wheel wells. Cool. I'll be heading up to Mt. Hood to do some snowboarding this winter, so the wieght should do me some good.
I have a set of chains too.
Macman37 - great idea with the folding Army shovel. I think I'm gonna pick one of those up too.

Message: Mike - Perhaps it is the R/T with stock tires or just the conditions of the unplowed lot with 6" of powder on top of a sheet of ice or even a combination of both.
All I know is that I was on my way home from work(midnight shift) 35 miles away and end up getting stuck for 30min not 250' from my front door(which I could plainly see the whole time I was stuck...adding to my level of pisstivity).
Needless to say...I swore to myself at that moment that I would never allow this to happen again...I do drive a truck and I expect it to act like one when the need arises.
PS...I did get out without any help but it was not an easy task.
Sorry about the ramblin on...

Message: A lot of those problems are probably from the stock R/T tires/wheels. You should have been running a tire 2" shorter in width and on a taller tire. That would have made a worlds worth of difference.
Dillio, be sure to keep them there, they'll slide up or down and freeze back in that spot. A wooden frame makes it less of a pain. It sucks when you get stuck only to find your bags have welded themselves cab side of the bed.
