Message: What have you determined is the best way to shift this combination to get the best fuel economy. When I first got my truck, I got 15 the first few tanks. I added a cover and got 16.5 for a few tanks. Now I am getting close to 15.5 . All of this is with 50% city. There is only 4k miles on the truck, so I think my shift habits have changed.
Obviously a light foot is better, but is it better to hold it in a lower gear a little longer so the engine doesnt have to work as hard, shift sooner to drop the rpm down? Also, what gear do you use for around 40-50?

Message: The engine is most efficient in it's power band, that said, it may not get the best Mpg there at all times. Injected engines are a bit diff. than carbed engines, in that the mpg went up slightly when they put FI on an engine.
@ 40-50mph, I use 3rd, if accelerating occas., or 4th, for cruising, NOT 5th.
01, QC, 4.7, 5spd, etc.

Message: keep it between 1500RPM and 2100RPM for the best mileage .. there's a local peak in VE around there ... then there's a dip b/n 2200 and 2700 RPM so stay outta there. b/n 2800 and 4000 RPM or so is the big peak where the torque peaks, like TTodd said, that's the most efficient point of the engine, but you certainly wont get the best gas mileage there (if you happened to be operating the engine under full load at WOT all the time, that would be the place to operate it).

Message: Well I had a 98 V6 2wd before this one, and with the smaller tires I was shifting a little sooner. I noticed when I got this one with teh same gearing (but bigger tires) the RPMs were lower, and I kept it in a higher gear in the city. I think I went back to what I did in the old truck, and might be shifting too soon. I find myself wanting to put it into 5th if I am cruising at 40.
I will see how the next tank goes.
