Subject: Clockspring Problem IP: Logged
Message: Just wanted to know if anybody has had trouble with their steering wheels. Mine made a horrible noise (like crinkling paper inside) then the radio/cruise controls quit working. Then the air bag warning system started beeping and flashing.
I took it to the dealer and they replaced the whole steering wheel assembly due to a defective clockspring. Don't know what the clockspring is but they fixed it in one day and I haven't had any more trouble.

Message: I've got a 94' and around 55k the "clock spring" had to be replaced. My cruise quite working so I took it in to the dealer. He said the air bag would quit working eventually if I didn't replace the "clock spring". I've got the extended warrenty bumper to bumper I believe, but it didn't cover the clock spring. What the hell is up with that? What the hell is the point of a warrenty if it doesn't cover anything? Needless to say I was pissed off. But in almost 7 years, that is the only problem I've had (knock on wood). BTW, what did you pay for the repair? I think it cost me a couple hundred. They didn't replace the whole stearing wheel, just the clock spring. I don't know what a clock spring is either.

Message: The clockspring is used to maintain a continuous electrical circuit between the fixed wire harness on the steering column and several electrical components that rotate with the steering wheel. Those components are the driver's side airbag, the horn switch, and if equipped, the cruise control and the remote radio switches. The clockspring assembly cannot be repaired. If it doesn't work or the airbag has been deployed the clockspring must be replaced.

Message: My clockspring did the same at about 1000 miles. I have a 2000 4.7l and the dealer fixed no problem. Weird though. scared me a little when the airbag light came on. My dad joked about how he was going to kick my bumper in.

Message: Mine just started doing it yesterday. My best friends broke the week he brought it home. Guess I need to call the dealership before mine breaks.

I've had 2 clock springs replaced on my 2000 dakota, and my partner just had his done today. The two trucks are twins, Sn xxxxxx-38 and -39.
I checked with Chrystler today, and they tell me that there was a clock spring recall issued on June 10, 2001..... Seems they are all on borrowed time.

Message: Well I didn't have my steering wheel replaced just the clock spring and it was covered under warrenty. I was happily in and out of the dealer in about 6 hours :)
It's been two months and I'm hearing that noise again :( There is however, like mentioned, a recall on them so I will get it fixed again.

Message: I just had the steering rack replaced in my 2008 Dakota because of a leaky seal. Now I have an air bag light, along with the cruise control and horn not working. Is it possible when the rack was removed the steering wheel was turned too far causing the clock spring to fail?
