Subject: Snapping noise

Need help locating the source of a snapping noise coming from rear end when brake pressure is applied. It will disappear when shoes are tight on drum. When the self-adjuster needs to adjust the shoes the snapping noise sounds like something really major is ready to break. Pulled the rear drum today & checked the shoes. They appeared fine. Checked for axle bearing play & seen about 1/16” up/down or forward/reverse play. The brakes have about 12k miles on them & the noise has been occurring all this time. New springs, adjusters, & drums were turned..

Thanks for the suggestions…..

93 3.9 w/140k miles, 8.25 rear end
