Subject: Flowmaster of Gibson
IP: Logged

Message:
I'm trying to decide on an ahaust system and was wondering if I could get some feedback form anyone who has installed thee models.

Gibson claims more power, torque, quicker response, and quiet.

Flowmaster has a few models (30, 40, 50, 70, 80). Is the interior resonance bothersome on any of these models? They claim a unique sound, and also more power.

Anyone know how much more powere these brands can actually bring? Will I have to turn my radio up a lot louder with any of these?

Thanks,

I have a flowmaster on mine. Also had flowmasters on my 98 & 99 F150's. I'm running one of the new 50 series Delta Flow sinlge in dual out. The delta flow does not have the interior resonance problem of the non Delta flow ones. The 40 series are pretty loud. My 50 has a very nice grumble to it but is not overpowering in the cab. Nice performance gain with a K&N filter. The 40 & 50 series Flomasters both have the same power gains, just different sound. I have also heard good things about Gibson. I'm considering putting a Gibson system on my wife's Durango. My mileage is the same to maybe a little better. Hard for it not to get worse though. The extra power and sound makes you want to push the go peddle even more!!

Cool! I am not looking to go to loud, just a nice rumble..hehe. I noticed some are made of Aluminum or Stainless. It there a better choice for looks or durability. I live up north, so we get quite a bit of salt on the roads.

Thanks for all your feedback...

I saw some people posting having problems with the duel exhaust on the dak cc. Is there a problem with that or is there a prob with duel from the engine. I am looking at the gibson single or duel.

I'm in Mass. (Just modified my profile on here). I'm not in your neck of the north = )

It's still a tossup on the Gibson vs. the Flowmaster. I haven't priced the Flowmaster yet, but the Gibson looks a little up there ($400). I'm not in any hurry yet though. Just sort of compiling a list of the few mods I can make on a 2001...

You can take my opinion with a grain of salt being that I havent changed over my exhaust yet, But my local parts guy who really seems to know his shit is really trying to steer me away from flowmaster...He says I would not be happy with it, and Gibson is the way to go...He claims the Flowmaster is alot louder than the Gibson..(which I dont want) Maybe hes just trying to sell me the more expensive one...I think I may go with the Gibson anyway.

Just for comparison, my flomaster setup cost me $225. A local shop did it for me. I had them order the muffler for me. They usually stock the 70 series. Like I said before, both Gibson and Flowmaster are good products. It all comes down to personal choice.
Jay, I haven't had any problems with duals on mine.

Mike, Gibson's are a bit quieter than some of the flowmasters. Remember, Flowmaster has a lot of different mufflers. 40, 50, 70, 80, and Delta Flow 40 & 50(mine) series. All make different levels of volume and tone. Like I said, Gibsons rock too. Heard one on a Durango the other day and it was sweet. Thats why I'm considering it for my wife's Durango.

What HP/TQ gain numbers does Flowmaster quote for the Delta 50 series, for a 4.7L auto?

I'm leaning towards Gibson's 3in Swept Side system, 12HP 25FT/LBS TQ gain (or so the Gibson tech quoted)

I'm in for the best HP/TQ gains if the sound isn't too loud in the cab, will spend the cash to get this...

I'm not sure what their numbers are. I'll have to do a little checking and research. I do know that with my K&N filter in, I can tell a difference in my power, especially on the low end.

Ok, I'm gonna answer my own question as I just spoke to Flowmaster's Tech line (800-544-4761)

For their Delta Series 50 3in catback system, the price is $284. 'Usable' gains for the 4.7L QC are 8-11% over stock, which translates to 18.4 - 25.3 HP and 23.6 - 32.45 FT/LBS of Torque gains.

Now if you believe Flowmaster, this setup for about $5 cheaper than the Gibson Swept Side 3in setup, gives more power gains.

BTW, this is a bolt on system, part #17278 with Flowmaster saying it can be found for less than $284 (best price I've found for the Gibson so far is $289 from JC Whitney)

You beat me to the phone!!! The numbers sound about right. Like I said before, I only paid $225 for my dual setup including having the muffler ordered. I do know that whatever system one goes with, you need to replace the air filter with at least a K&N replacement filter. Induction systems will be even better. Doesn't do a lot of good to let more air out without letting more in.

Good point about air flow...I may order just the Delta 50 Series muffler, single in, single out (believe this give the most gains) and have a local shop do the 3inch pipe work...however, during this same time, I'll be installing a Airaid Cold-air induction system (while waiting on K&N's FIPJ GEN II), change out the factory oil/filter to Royal Purple Synthetic 5w30 with Mobil1 Filter, then reset the memory tables in the PCM to re-learn what I'm sure will be my more aggressive driving habits...all this after I reach break-in mileage of 500 or so miles on my new QC (due end of this month)...I'm sure my smile will be even wider compared to first driving the QC after picking it up!

Have you driven a stock 4.7 yet? If not then you will smile when you first drive it and really smile after your mods. I too am waiting on K&N. Should be out by late summer I'm told. Also waiting on Hypertech's programmer. Late summer also. Thanks for reminding me. I need to reset my pcm too. I keep forgetting to do that. have to do it this weekend. As for oil, I'll be switching too. Been using Valvoline but I'm going to switch to Mobile 1 tri synthetic blend. Thats what all my local dealers (5 of them) use and they say comes in it from the factory. I like the Puralator Pure One filters.
