Subject: Powertrax No-Slip ?? IP: Logged
Message: Has anyone got the Powertrax No-Slip locker on their 4x4 Gen3 Dakota? Did you install it yourself? Was it an easy install? Finally, does the side slipping that occurs when accelerating around a corner in the snow really seem that bad or is it controllable by easing off the gas a bit? A 4wd shop actually talked me out of buying one because of the snow handling thing ......go figure. Still considering it though.

Message: I know I don't completely apply since I only have 2WD, but you take what you can get, right? I have had my Powertrax in for 11 months now and have been very happy with it. Assuming you have an open diff now the Powertrax is easy to install. Takes about an hour of actual hands on time as long as you take time to really understand the instructions and prep. Also be ready to wait for RTV to dry before you can refill it with fluid.
I have played in about 5 inches of snow with and without it and I have to say it is a huge difference. I can easily get the rear to wag around a corner, but as long as I take it easy it's not a problom. Like I say, it's a completely different feel, so it would be a good idea to find an open parking lot to play in to relearn how it acts.

Message: Hey, DaveR.
Can you give more info on that Powertrax No-Slip in your 2WD? Where did you get it, drawbacks, cost, etc. Is it a true locking differential?
Thanks...
Dan.

Message: The power Trax is a true locker and it does chirp on turns and you will hear it lock and unlock as you accel and decel. I just researched this area and as long as you have the 9.25 axel the Power trax should work for you. If you have LSD then the install mey be trickier than if you have an open diff.
Draw backs, I am not sure of though. I have talked to a few others that have the Power Trax and they like them. I think Detroit is a more durable way to go though after all the research I ended up doing. I had to go Detroit since I have 8.25 axel with LSD. But most do not like paying more for quality. Power Trax is a great Locker do not get me wrong this is only what I found through research.
Hope that helps some.

Message: I have the Powertrax in my R/T. Was no problem installing it in my factory LSD differential. Just more parts to remove in order to install the PowerTrax. Works much better than the factory limited slip. If you are just coasting aroudn corners, it's a little noisy and makes a ratcheting sound. The nickname for my truck was the roller coaster because it sounded like a roller coaster going up the first big hill when going around corners. When you have even a lightest amount of gas applied, it locks up the diff and under light throttle I felt a slight jerking motion, I guess that was the outside wheel being drug, but under medium to hard throttle, it woudl just pull right around the corner nicely.

Message: The argument some make against limited slips and lockers, in general, is that they may catch an unsuspecting driver off-guard when driving in slippery conditions (ie., snow & rain).
In all fairness, I've found that an lsd or locker to be an asset when trying to drive in slippery conditions. I've seen a night-and-day improvement in climbing up snow covered hills with a locker, as opposed to an open diff.
You always need to remember that applying throttle too briskly may slide your vehicle, especially on steeply crowned roads, as the wheel with less resistance tries to pull the vehicle around.

Message: I haven't found any problems with noise from the rearend. I do however have noise from the tires when going around sharp corners. No that I went to Scorpion S/T's the tires chirp when it locks and unlocks. About the best instruction I have seen are provided with the unit and the customer service was very helpfull.
I did notice a big change in the way it felt to drive when I changed it. Like I said, I would suggest to anyone that changes the rear end in a similar way to find a parking lot on a wet or snowy day and relearn what the truck does when turning. Not to excess, but to understand what your feeling.
A question for the rest of you that have the Powertrax: Did you add any friction modifiers? I put in Mobil 1 sythetic gear fluid and haven't had any problems. Just figured I should ask while we were on the subject.

Message: Thanks guy's. Yes Dave R. I'm talking open diff. Also to reiterate, I'm talking about the Powertrax No-Slip and NOT the Powertrax Lock Right.
The ratcheting on corners is there with the latter but is supposed to be greatly reduced in the No-Slip. The price I got was $675.00 Cdn.
In line with $400.00 US.
To the question above "Is it a true locker and not a LSD?" the answer is YES.
I've driven in snow for years,Hey I'm Canadian, so the weather isn't what I'm worried about. I just want to know if the benefits of this locker outweigh the drawbacks and the cost.

Message: The powertrax no-slip is virtually undetectable in my dakota's rear axle. I use it very often off road and it gets me everywhere a 4x4 ram can go. It's unbelievable to watch the faces of spectators as their doubts are washed away as i make my way through a huge mud pit with ease. I was recently wheeling with a buddy who had a 4x4 ram this past weekend. He made a hill climb in 2wd...failed cuz it was too muddy. Clicked into 4wd and made it with ease. He said i will have trouble but when i attempted, i didn't even spin a wheel. He was shocked....didn't get suck once that day. This winter will be my first test in the white slippery stuff called snow :)
By teh way, my locker cost $450 including install and it's the powertrax no-slip for the 8.25 axle.

Message: I did not use any friction modifier in mine either. Since there are no clutches, there is no need for it.
