Message: I have a 98 Dakota with a V6. I have had trouble with the cruise control from the day I bought it. Now the major problems have been fixed but one remains.
As I travel down the Interstate at 70MPH on cruise, I can see the tack rev up 150 to 200 RPM at random intervals for a sec. and then it falls back to normal RPM. The truck feels like it is momentarly in neutral.
The dealership can never see these blips.
Any suggestions as to what might be the problem?

It only happens in Cruise control mode. I have an automatic trans.

Message: I'm going to make an assumption that the MPH is not going up with the RPM. If the tranny is staying in overdrive and the torque converter has no reason to unlock, then it sounds like you have a transmission or torque converter problem. If the cruise control was at fault, you would a corresponding increase in MPH with RPM. I know very little about the inner workings of the auto trans (it's magic I think) but I lean toward the torque converter being the problem. Mechanically it is probably O.K. but somewhere in the lock up control something is faulty and is temporarily unlocking and relocking. Hope this helps.

Message: Ned,
I was running this by my son and he said He would have come to the same conclusion. Then he told me that he works with a guy that had the same problem with his Durango. After 3 trips to the shop, they drove it for about 50 miles to get the problem to show itself. They found the the TPS (throttle position sensor) was faulty and was the cause of the converter unlocking. Result: they changed TPS and Durango is fine now.

Why do you suppose this doesn't happen when I am not using cruise control?

Message: Only a guess here - the TPS is sending info to the computer. The computer is telling the cruise control what to do. When you are not using cruise, you are controlling the throttle directly. This takes the fault out of the loop.
What I wonder about is if the TPS is sending bad info to the computer, what else is happening. The TPS info helps the computer choose the right fuel and timing advances.

Message: You were right. Replacing the TPS solved the problem and improved my gas milage. The mechanic was reluctant to replace it saying that the "Check Engine" light would have come on if the sensor were faulty. He ran a computer diagnostic ($56.00) and replaced the sensor.

Message: I am very confused by this:
The cruise control light just flashes very quickly when I start the vehicle so the LED light must be OK. When I press the ON/OFF button, the LED light used to come on and I could set the control to maintain a speed. Now I press the button and nothing happens. All vacuum hoses are connected and so is the cable to the throttle body. The owner's manual claims that fuse #15 (2 amp grey, 2-blade type) is for the cruise control. There is no such fuse in the system and I never removed it; and to make matters more confusing, when I look into the fuse block, there is only one contact in the fuse block so even if I put a fuse in, it wouldn't complete any circuit.
Any help would be appreciated.
Also, at times, the idle speed surges up and down by 200 rpm or so. It does it both in Drive while at a light and in Park. Could these two items be related? It has 56,000 miles and 14 MPG is all I get out of it but it has plenty of power so I don't think ignition or fuel is the problem.
Thanks in advance. This is on a 1996 Dakota V-8, 5.2L, SLT, 4 spd Auto

Message: On my 2000 QC with 4.7 auto, the cruise has stopped working. The dashboard light does not come on and the cruise cannot be set. It worked last week. There are no fuses shown as being for the cruise in either the inside fuse box or the under hood fuse box. Any ideas before I go to the dealer??
Thanks

Message: Dave,
on my 96 the owner's manual refers to a fuse that I cannot locate either. The factory repair manual shows none in any of the electrical diagrams. Have you checked all the vacuum connections? If the LED light on the steering quit working, be careful that there is a warning in my book about accidental deployment of the air bag. They say to disconnect the battery AND wait 3 minutes for various capacitors to discharge. You may need to replace the module. It sounds like your indicator light is on the dash board. Di I confuse you?

Message: Dave,
There is a recall for a clockspring replacement within the steering housing. This got caught up in my doohicky thingamajiggers behind the steering wheel and shut my cruise control off. Not sure if you've had this serviced yet.

Message: Thanks Andy and YJ. I have not had the clockspring recall done yet, scheduled for tomorrow along with them checking out the Cruise. The Cruise light comes on when starting, so it ain't the light, I assume that it is the switch or electrical and can see how the clockspring may be the root cause. Oh well, it was time for the tranny service and differential lube anyhow so I will be giving it to the stealer for a day.

Message: My 2000 Dodge Ram Pickup with 5 speed manual transmission has a problem with the cruise control.
It will work for a brief time, but then fails to maintain the set speed. If I push the accelerator down, sometimes it resumes holding the speed and sometimes it goes back down 5 or 10mph to where it has reset itself.
Going uphill, it fails to accelerate to maintain the set speed.

Message: Hey everyone, i just got the TPS replaced on my truck. Was doing the random RPM change. I brought it in and they adjusted the kickdown cable? first...didnt help. I TOLD them to replace the TPS and the problem is solved. Very easy fix for those who have the problem. My truck would do it more when the Air was on, the cruise was on, or there was a strong wind. But it would still do it with the cruise off. Easy fix.

Message: I changed the TPS last night and it fixed the problems I had. Cruise Control could not be used due to the surging. With AC on I would get surging. $84.05 from the dealer and 20 minutes of my time. I can't believe it was that easy.
My buddy has been taking his '02 Quad back to the dealer for this same problem 4 times. He brought a print out of this post and they still would not change it but the did order a new Comp for his truck. The service department knows what it does but can not get a error code so they can't fix it or just replace something that is not tested bad. I wonder why they ordered a new comp for it, it did not test bad. I love it when these guys contradict themselves.
It sure is a great feeling when you fix something that seemed worse than it was.

Message: I seem to have a cruise control problem that is a little different than I've read about here so far. It has happened twice now and it is a little scary. The first time it seemed to get stuck on nearly full throttle and did not disengage when the brakes were engaged or when the cruise was turned off. The second time it got stuck, but the acceleration was more gradual. Both times it was lower than 20 degrees outside. It seems to work fine when it is not so cold. Anyone have any ideas?

Message: I have a 2003 Dakota w/ automatic trans. whose overdrive sometimes does not disengage when going over a hill with the cruise control on. The dealer has "reset the computer"(no improvement) and "adjusted the throttle pressure" (some improvement, but still sometimes loses up to 15 mph). Has anyone had this problem or can anyone suggest a solution?
