The following procedure will aid in diagnosing a blown plenum (or bellypan) gasket. A blown plenum gasket will lead to higher than normal oil consumption, spark knocking (pinging), and poor performance and mileage.
1) Remove PCV valve and breather element from the valve covers.
2) Place your thumb over the hole in the valve cover where the PCV valve was.
3) With the motor idling (at operating temperature), you should feel either a positive pressure or a vacuum.
4) Keep your thumb there for about 15seconds; if you feel pressure, it's A-OK... if you feel a vacuum, then your plenum gasket should be replaced.
