Subject: Pre-Ignition Ping IP: Logged
Message: I almost always have a small pre-ignition ping during acceleration. I know most of the fixes for this problem like: higher octane gas, cooler thermostat, reduce timing. Granted, I'm running regular 87 octane and moving to 89 or 93 may fix it but it seems to me that a brand new vehicle with no mods should be able to run on 87 octane with no pre-ignition. This kinda sucks due to gas prices still skyrocketing. The manual says that some pre-ignition is normal (that kinda worries me) but this seems a little excessive. Do any of you other 4.7 owners have the same problem?

Message: To me, no amount of detonation, pinging, or pre-ignition is normal. I don't care what anybody says. If your engine is tuned correctly and the internal temperatures are correct you should experience no pinging. Now, that's not saying that the factory gets this stuff correct all the time. They don't, and certainly not for Dakota engines, however there are some remedies available which will correct the problem rather than mask the problem. Using a higher octane fuel masks the problem. All you're doing is putting in fuel that's harder to ignite. This will help the pinging but just because you've made it so it doesn't accidentally ignite doesn't make it good for your engine overall because now it's harder for the normal mixture to ignite. So, instead of doing it that way, you can:
1) Go to Dodge and let them retard your timing 4º. This seems to work most of the time. Problem is, you lose some performance with this fix. Ugh! We're all here for more power, not less power.
2) Go to Dodge and get your spark plug wires rerouted. Sometimes this works and someimes it doesn't. 50/50 proposition.
3) You can go to a colder spark plug which will keep your cylinder cooler so that your fuel mixtures don't have a tendency to ignite because it's too hot in there. This works for a lot of people and the recommended plugs work pretty good also.
Recommendation: If you have a 4.7 engine, use Bosch 4417's. If you have a 3.9, 5.2, or 5.9 use Autolite 3923's. Plug gaps should be the factory recommendation unless you have an aftermarket ignition system. Then use their recommendation. Look under your hood.
4) Change your thermostat to a Robertshaw 755-180. Why, you ask? Our Dodge engines run optimally at 183º so a 180º t-stat is perfect. Not only that, a cooler t-stat keeps your cylinders cooler thereby helping to eliminate pinging.
5) Clean your TB regularly, especially the IAC (on the back of the TB). Just don't twist the pintle on the inside of the IAC or you'll be buying a new one. It's easier to take the TB iff and clean it. Use TB cleaner.
6) While you're doing #5, look down the holes in your manifold. One of the most common problems causing loss of power, loss of MPG, loss of vacuum, and pinging is a blown belly pan gasket. Your manifold has a metal piece that fits underneath the manifold itself. In between that metal and the manifold is a gasket. When that leaks you will find a noticeable layer of oil sitting on the bottom of the manifold. There is a TSB on this and it is replaceable under warranty.
7) Pour a bottle of fuel injector cleaner in your tank every 5K miles or less. Dirty injectors don't push out enough fuel causing your engine to run lean. That makes it hotter. That along with a smaller amount of fuel. Guess what happens? PING!
Had enough?! Check or do these things and you shouldn't have pinging problems. I don't.

Message: I notice some minor pinging on hills or during hard acceleration with my 4.7. I wouldn't worry about it too much because the old GM 2.5 four banger was notorious for that and many lasted well over 100,000 miles. Mine seems to like 87 if it's quality gas and not the 50/50 water-gas mixture that some retailers buy at low bid. Good luck whatever you decide.

Message: 1) I'm not doing that for obvious reasons.
2) I don't have plug wires
3) Thanks for this info. I've been wondering which plug was best for the 4.7.
4) I'm actually planning on this. I still wanted to do more checking on what this might do to the OBDII. Any known problems on the 4.7 from doing this?
5, 6, &7) I only have 900 miles on it.
Thanks RonW

Message: I too have recently purchased a 2001 dak 4X4 w/ 4.7lt motor and first noticed the ping on a long trip. Took to dealer that i purchased from and had them send someone with me to hear ping between 2k and 3k they were forced to recognize it was there but said there was no fix for it as of yet. I am schedualed to bring it back because i said this was unacceptable. Wondering if this could be applicable under Lemon Law? I didnt spend my good money for a truck that pings!!!

Message: Check with Speedtweaks. I would change to the Autolite 3923 or 3922's,and a 180 t-stat. Mine has never pinged. Maybe some of you have a bit more timing and are getting the pinging while others may have less timing(and less power). Just a guess.

Message: Thanks MAD DUC guess my point is that i just paid what i thought was an awefull lot of money for a brand new truck that was running fine for about the first 2000 miles but now has a ping. I expect them to fix it or give me a new truck. I have only got 3000 miles on it now. Very frustrated about feeling the need to put anything more than normal maintanence into a new truck!!! Hopefully im not dreamin. other than the ping i enjoyed the truck immensely!!

Message: I had a ping too, a part-throttle noise that drove me nuts with the sliding back window open. As it sounded louder at the exhaust pipe rather than the engine, I didn't really think it was an octane ping, and proved that by running a few tanks of 92 octane. A muffler shop guy said that it was just "pipe noise", and a good running engine can do that!!?? Dealers had no idea, and wanted to warranty the muffler! Much later, after five years and 50K miles on the 318, I felt guilty about my lack of maintenance, and dropped in some Bosch platinum spark plugs, as they were on sale. Lo and behold, the "Pipe Noise" ping went away!! If I'd have only known how easy that fix was, I'd have saved a few grey hairs!!

Message: just to update you on progress on my dakota 4.7 auto ping. i took it in to have the pcm updated and it did not stop the ping at all. initially it ran worse then i assume the computer made adjustments or something then it ran little better. so i have to run super unleaded or it will ping. that is only thing i can do cause if i change sparkplugs or thermostat i could void the warrenty according to the dealership.
