Subject: Need Help Quick, Brake Lights!! IP: Logged
Message: I just went to get my vehicle inspected here in va. Turns out that my brake lights arent working. Now the taillights work fine and the fuse relay under the hood is still getting power but when the brakes are depressed the brake lights dont come on, althought the 3rd brake light still does. Anyone have any ideas on what could be wrong?? I was thinking possibly along the lines of the brake switch but not sure, any help is appreciated.

Message: I would ahve to think that there is some sort of logic controller to control the brake lights and turn signasl (same bulb)... Maybe look in the manual or under the dash / hood. Does the relay still switch? maybe try swapping it for another one?
Good luck, I have never worked this problem myself so I am just shooting in the dark.

Message: Well under the bottom of the dash there is a switch. I know on my older trucks there is a switch with a button on the front, that when you pushed the brakes the shaft on the brake pedal would push in that button on the switch and thats what would engage the brake lights. On my dak there is a little electrical box with what looks to be a cable connected to the shaft on the brake pedal. Im hoping thats what the problem is, that little electrical box. Thanks for the input.

Message: I don't think that is the problem since the 3rd brake light is working. I would assume that it has to be after that, somewhere that the barke light logic changes for brakes or directionals...

Message: That makes sense, if im not mistaken there are two totally different sets of wires running back for just taillights and for brake lights. Maybe there is a short somewhere on the wires for the brakes lights? I dunno, ill see if these crysler guys can figure it out, THANK GOD FOR EXTENDED WARRANTY! lol

Message: Are your turn signals working?? There are two different filaments int he bulbs. One for taillights and one for brake/turn signals. If the turn signals work, then it has to be a brake problem, and since the 3rd brake light works, then I wouldn't know where to start.

Message: Yeah, all of those checked out fine. The dedicated fuse for the brake lights is in the panel under the hood. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Message: Im not sure what you mean by relay? The only things i could think of was the fuse, which was in the fuse panel under the hood, and the switch that is on the brake petal shaft, or maybe a short somewhere in the wiring, but it would have to be somewhere between the fuse and the lights because the fuse is fine and still has power going to it.

Message: A relay is a device that allows a switch to see only a small current to turn on something that uses more current. It is basically a eltrically turned on switch. Since we know that power is getting to the fuse and I assume you OHM'd out the fuse to confirm that it is good?
Assuming this we know that the power is at least getting to the next switching point, I would assume this is a control box of some kind if there are no relays. Relays are under the hood in the fuse panel by the battery. Look under the cover of that and see if there is anythign besides the fuse you already checked that is marked as tail lights. Ottherwise it may be dealer time.
Sorry Bud.

Message: I just got in from work and am too tired to go hunting for relay's now, lol. Ill just leave it up to the dealer boys, its free to me and no time or skin off my a$$! Atleast as long as they get those damn things fixed so i can get my dak inspected again and get her back on the roads raising some hell.

Message: I was thinking the relay might be bad too, but if the tunr signals are working then that leaves out the relay theory. Don't think there is a brake relay, but I coudl be wrong. I'm sure there is a left and rt turn signal relay.

Message: HSKR you were right with your first guess. Turns out the relay for the turn signals had the brake lights tied into it as well. Needless to say the brake light portion went bad so the whole relay had to be replaced. From what the service guy was tellin me, when the parking lights were turned on and the brake pedal was pushed the entire rear lights would go off. That makes sense though. Well, after waiting around for 3 hours and $180 bucks later its fixed. Its funny too thought, this $2000 dollar extended warrany sh!t i bought with it, turns out to have hundred dollar deductible and they only paid $11 and some change. What a freaking rip off!

Message: But if you need to have say an engine replaced under extended warranty then it saves quite a bit of money. Personally I woudl never buy one either because I can't leave my vehicles stock, but I did receive a extended warranty for free on my '99 R/T that came in VERY useful.
