Subject: ABS Light and No Speedo IP: Logged
Message: Here is a question for someone. On my way home from work tonight, my abs and brake light came on, then the speedo stopped working, all almost simutaniously(sp) a little bit later the Check engine light came on. Truck still runs fine, I jumped on the brakes and they seem alright(didn't lock up). any ideas?

Message: you need a new ABS sensor, it also controls your speed-o. check and see what code is in it, it should be for " Rear sensor open".

Message: The code is saying that it needs a new speed sensor. That was just replaced earlier this year because the truck wouldn't come out of first. Where is that ABS sensor located? Someone told me it might be on the rear diff, or would it be the ones that are on the wheels?

Message: which code is it and which speed sensor is it? input or output speed sensor? the ABS sensor is on top of the rear diff. with a connector on it. do you know which speed sensor was replaced? if you have access to a DRBIII, use it and let me know which codes in it. if you can do that. whate are you from anyways?

Message: It's been a common failure on Durangos on the Durango Owners Club forum. The ABS light on and the speedo not functioning over 20 mph, it's the sensor on top of the differential for sure. There is an ABS sensor on the front axle but that will not affect the speedo.

Message: I am gonna run back over to Auto Zone and get the codes. I the codes were like P500 and p501 or something like that. But I am gonna run back over there tonight and have them check it again. Kinda nice not having a speedo though, the odometer doesn't work either. Truck has almost 98,000 on it and it's a 99.

Message: I had that happen to me once, and what it was ended up being when I let the key go after starting it, it effectively bounced a little past the "on" position and opened a set of contacts that should normally be closed, but most of the contacts were still okay. (my after market radio also cut out). It was rush hour so I didn't have a chance to see if it killed the limiter as well :)

Message: I had my 2002 in three time for the same problem and they replaced the sensor each time.
This last time I was pissed and they finally replaced the C.A.B. module in the engine bay and its been fine since then, so make sure they check the CAB also. Mine was defective right from the factory every time I used the brakes I could hear the relays making a clicking sound, and now its not making that sound anymore. Stay on top of your dealer!!!

Message: The speedo sensor is definately the problem. I've got a '99 and it went out over summer, ABS and brake lights came on. Sensor costs about $45 at dealer, real easy to replace, on top of rear diff. After replacing, lights will still be on, even though speedo will work. Code needs to be cleared from computer. Autozone can do it for ya.

Message: I replaced it this morning, cost me $31 plus tax for the part. ABS light went right off, but check engine was still on. Drove it around for a while and the Check engine light went off. Guy at the dealer told me that it is a very common problem for 98-2000 Dakotas and Durangos.
