Z06 would whoop the crap out of the cobra. One of the mustang musle mags did an article with the 2002 35th anniversary camaro and the 2003 cobra. Cobra only beat it down the 1/4 by a couple of tenths and only 3/10s on the road course... and then they had the nerve to say the camaro had too much body roll.... even though a car with 65 less horsepower kept up to it!

I hate mustangs as much as the next guy, but 390 hp out of the box for what is it like $32K? now the vette is like $50K+. So with a pulley a better exhaust, air intake, T-body, and some slicks, you will cream a vette and still be under $40K.
You really can't compare a vette to a cobra, sure the power may be close but there in 2 different classes. The stang being an "affordable" performance car, while the vette is a performance car with a lot more class. I wouldn't even consider the vette and viper to be in the same class. Just my $.02

I would take either car. My vote's for the vette stock vs stock. I am not a huge Mustang person, but the new Cobra looks mean as hell.

2003 ZO6 has 405 crank HP. (Thats 345-350 RWHP)
2003 Cobra has 390 RWHP. (Thats 450-460 Crank HP)
Who would win?
If the drivers were equal, the Cobra would win (if they were both equipped with slicks) due to the much flatter torque curve provided by the S/C'ed engine. You guys are going off what the magazines say as times and power, but Atlanta Chassis & Dyno has had 5 different '03 Cobras pull over 390 RWHP right off the showroom floor. Yeah, the Cobra is a better deal and it makes more power, especially for the amount paid. The weight advantage goes to the Z06 (3116 vs. 3665), but there again, the torque curve will save the experienced driver since you need more RPM to make similar torque with the Vette.

I'm also a witness of the '03 Cobra at the Dyno...I saw a guy that had just bought one off the lot and dynoed it and it pulled a 391rwhp the first run. He was stunned to say the least, so was everyone else.

yea, buddy has a new 03 cobra convert. nice car, but it kinda dissapoints me. its too damn heavy. some of the magazines have ahd a hard time breaking that thing under 13 sec quarters. he hasnt either (he cant drive haha). i love smoking his 45k car in my camaro. the thing needs a diet badly :) . my dak on the bottle will get him too :) . but for what they are, the z06 and cobra are killer. z06 is a world class sports car and the stang is a modern muscle car (even with its displacement deprived mill). noone else is making everyday-drivable, resonably affordable cars like these straight out the factory. poor f-body is gone, and i dont got 40k, so ill just have to stick to making my hot rods and keeping my fingers crossed... they dont got warrenties like the new suff.

ps- the viper IS a dissapointment as well. i mean c'mon.. 500ci and only 500 hp? iknow, i know, its still 500hp, but they eclipsed the 1hp/1ci way back in the 50's.

If a stock mach1 with drag radials in 90 degree weather can pull in high 12's than you know a 2003 cobra should have no problem getting low 12's or high 11's. (which they do)
Tex, I dont mean this as a flame or anything but it sounds like the magazines your reading, about the 03 Cobra, dont know how to drive...

The '03 Cobra ran 12.34 on street tires in the 1/4. It'll definitely run faster than that with slicks. And Clevite, they are underrated for insurance purposes, just like a lot of engines in the past have been. I know they hit over 390 RWHP on dynos all accross the county, so it's not a mistake. I know I could take a Z06 with an '03 Cobra if they were both equipped with slicks.
On a side note, the '73 Super Duty Trans Am with the 455 was rated at something like 275 HP, but it managed to post some massive numbers bone stock on both the strip and the dyno. The reason for the down grading of the HP rating was to avoid the massive insurance premiums at the time and for the gas crunch. Drive an '03 Cobra and then the Z06, then tell me which one will run.

Wow, that's a lot more than I would have expected out of that puney 4.6L (not that my 4.7L is much bigger) but they do need to lighten it a bit.

Remember that it has 4 valves per cylinder too Clevite. A lot of people forget how much more performance you can get out of an engine like that. Soooooo much more efficient, especially when blown :)~

You can never compare a '03 Cobra or any year cobra to a Corvette , especially a Z06. That Cobra will always be a Mustang, that my friends will never change! You cannot appreciate the Z06 until you drive it. I've got a WS6 Trans AM 13.10 @ 106 MPH and this 2002 Z06 (yellow) just destroys it. Easily a mid to low 12 second car with just an OK driver. Instant "Bonerville" I drove it hard and it's like sitting in a missle. The Cobra on the other hard is no more than driving a really fast Mustang .. Period!

well i appreciate the non-flame. haha. im not really that worried about it. but i do belive car and driver or motor trend, which we all know are no driving hacks, and htey use corrected times (gay f-ing sh!t) and it was like 13 teens. i dont know about anyone else, but i assume yall go to the track often enough to know magazine numbers are, for the most part, a bit better than the actual slip from your everyday sat. night run. its the puss 'corrections' they subtract from the et. (altitude, humidity, temp, driver error, etc, etc) i think 4.6 is a techno cool motor as far as that goes, esp the 4valvers, but i see a 4.6 2v bone stock motor, 5sp, drag radials, and bone stock and full weight except a vortech and mac exhaust turn consistent high 11 sec passes on a weekly basis. now thats impressive. :) now hes got a 64 amc rambler with a 550ci bbc with a fogger set up. runs 9's @ over 140mph! haha. he zip ties the tag (yes, it street legal) to the parachute to drive it up to car club. freaking wack-job.

Nothing against the Z06. I dont doubt anyone that it can pull in some serious numbers. However the same thing applies to the Z06 as applies to the 03 Cobra. The Z06 is also just another Corvette. There have been ZR-1's that pull up comperable numbers (The 96' GrandSport esspecially).

I love the '96 Grand Sport! My buddy in the Navy had one and that thing was a blast to drive! Man, I miss the LT4 with 400+ HP. I like the new Z06 as well (really a world class car in my opinion), but between it and the '03 Cobra, I'll take the Cobra any day of the week. Less money, and very similar performance (if not better). Plus, you can turn the money difference into some pretty serious HP numebrs for the Cobra.

There is a guy here in Indiana that has an 03 cobra and all he did was a pully change and he ran an 11.2 in the 1/4. I don't know speed or if he was on slicks but still. make a ZO6 do that. I think they're apples and oranges also.
It's like the now age-old Viper vs. Vette deal. Put them on a road course and the vette will probably win. Put them on a drag strip and the viper will win all day long. Very different beasts for very different purposes. Sportscar vs. Muscle car.

Actually back when Motor Trend did a track test w/ numerous high class sports cars...Vette, Porsche, Viper and some other ones can't remember...but on all the track courses Viper came out #1. At the end though was a top speed test and Viper beat them all but blew the radiator at the end.

How can you compare a Z06 to the cobra. The 03 cobra can hardly beat a camaro ss let alone a corvette. The mustang mag. tested the 03 cobra with 390 hp at the crank and not the rwhp. against the SS with 320 hp at the crank and barly beat it by a couple of tenths of a second. last but not lest It's Viper vs. Z06 and Camaro SS vs 03 cobra. lets put it this way the 03 cobra can only beat a lighting by 7/10's of a second and the only way a rustang cobra will get in to the 11's by dropping it off a cliff. Just my 2 cents.. Dodgedakotas.com and not chevy or ford website!!!!!!!!!
