I hope you guys can help me out. I have a 2001 Dodge Dakota with the 3.9L v6 motor. When I come to a stop with the truck in Drive the motor ( or something up front ) starts to rattle. If I put it in Nutural the sound goes away. Also if i turn the steering wheel the sound will also go away. I only have 23,000 miles on this truck and would like to fix it myslef ( lack of time to wait for the dealership to look at it ) and was wondering if anyone has heard of this, or can point me in a direction to look. Thanks.

I had a 93 Dakota that did that ever since it had 50,000 miles on it, mine also did it in neutral. I traded it in with 175,000 miles on it, and it was still doing it. I always thought it was the clutch fan, but when I had to replace the water pump I started it up with no water pump or belt on it and it still did it. I think it might have been a worn out thrust bearing on the crank or the timing chain was a little stretched. Let me know what it is if you find out. It might also be an exhaust heat shield that hits enough when the engine is torqued just a little. good luck

Motor mount maybe?? Wife's car, although a Saturn, did the same thing in reverse at a stop.
Gibson Dual Sport, AirForce One air intake, Jet II, Jet TBS, 180 stat, IAT, TPS, no viscous fan, Lakewood traction bars, "Wilson" antenna ball...when are we gonna see some real parts??!!

The 3.9's a bad for timing chain rattle all years.
It won't hert anything but sounds like crap!
I think dodge sells a kit to correct it.

mine has had a marble inna can type rattle for the last 40,000 miles...done it since I got it.(used) my brother is a service adviser at a dodge store and he told me that they have an updated tensioner kit to fix the rattle. agravating , but if its not broke why fix it??????? 318's have the same noise so i'm told. Bill Ps. no we don't have the kit at AutoZone...i checked...lol or i'd give you guys the part number!!!! lol inside joke.

Yea, thats a shame that all many of us are having the same problems.... almost like the quality control @ dodge is asleep at the wheel. Hopefully I'll get the truck in during next week sometime. But yea, it does sound just like "a marble ina can" rattle to it. The only reason I dont want to take it in is because it only happens on certain days, and it doesn't always happen and if i can't repeat it at the dealership there gonna give me the notorious line.

My 99 RC with 3.9 rattled like the lifters were loose practically since it was new, dealer said it was normal and I drove it for almost 30K before trading it in with no repairs needed. It was a noisy reliable motor with no power and poor gas mileage but it never left me stranded!

I have a 1988 Dakota with the 3.9L V6, and it had the same rattle...it seems that the lower alternator bracket bolt (the one the alternater swivels on when tightening the belt) will work loose, allowing the alternator to "rattle", and it gets amplified through the big alternator bracket. My truck did the same thing (rattled in gear, but not in neutral), but once I tightened that bolt, the rattle went away. Hope this helps.

When I let my 92 dakota sit for more than a day the battery dies. When I charge the battey and get it running it wont rev past 1200rpm, and when I try to rev it the truck backfires bad. If I turn the truck of and start it again it runs fine until the next time I start the truck.

Hey, jl, mine doesn't go dead in a day, it takes 2-3 weeks; but I found out why. I've got a 92 Dak with V-6 and I found that the tachometer circuit board is designed to draw 105 milliamps of current, which is 5 to 10x what a vehicle should draw from its battery.
Remove fuse #6 from the fuse block and see if your battery holds up then. That's the horn and tachometer fuse. I remove it if unused for more than a day. Long-term, I'm going to cut-and-jump the circuit board so it draws power only from the ignition and not the battery.

eLiXiR I have your answer. Had the same rattle on my 3.9L '01 SLT. If you search the boards here long enough you'll find the solution. Mine was the heat shield on the passenger side of the engine. From what I remeber it was hitting an A/C tube or another line. Only did it at idle, i.e. you're in line at a drive through and can really hear it. I just took a bat and pushed on it, bending it slightly. Rattle disappeared to this day. Good luck!

Several possibilities on that. Could be faulty injector timing (which is set by the distributor body being rotated); could be a stretched timing chain that has the valve timing off; could be a catcon plugging up.

Bob, I had a tune up done on the truck about three months ago, thats when this weird starting thing started to happen. The shop that did the work said that they dont know what could have caused this problem, I will look into those things you said and hopefully you are right. Buy the way I remove the fuse when the truck sits and it has not gone dead yet "thanks".

Just don't forget to install it before use, or you'll have no horn. 8)
When I rewire my tach board to eliminate this current draw, I'll post pictures with the hyperlink here. It's a simple cut-and-jump. Right now it gets battery feed with ignition off (why?), and also ignition feed when on. It should only need power when ignition is on. I started the truck (so ignition power only) and then replaced the fuse, and tach worked fine. So this validates me wiring it to ignition power only.
