Subject: Problem - Low Pitch Rumble
IP: Logged

Message:
I have this low pitch rumble ( something like the rumble of thunder ) which seems to be coming from the driveshaft or rearend at around 40 to 70 mph. and it seems to be worse when I let off the throttle. There is also a tiny bit of vibration also. Any idea what this would be? It has been doing this since almost day one. Is there a tsb for this? Anyone else experience this?

Any help would be appreciated.

Oooh, sounds like a driveline problem, maybe one of your u-joints. That's potentially dangerous. I'd get it in to the dealer as soon as possible.

On the vibration...

I've had a rear-end vibration from 40 mph to just over 50 mph since about 7,000 miles (currently 18,200 on the truck). I can't even count how many times I've had it into the dealer for the vibration, and I'm currently waiting for a second DC tech rep to schedule a trip to Tampa to inspect the vehicle. They admit there is a problem but they have not been able to pinpoint what is causing it, and the last tech rep DC sent out was unwilling to authorize replacement of major components without knowing exactly what the problem was. To date the following has been done, all with no luck: endless visual inspections and test drives; test drove with wheels and tires from the service manager's Dak installed; replaced all tires; rotated tires; replaced rear brakes; replaced rear diff fluid and added a "friction modifier"; replaced transmission fluid; disconnected rear drive (test drove in 4WD); disconnected front drive (test drove in 4WD and 2WD). No luck. I think they should replace everything between the rear tires and the motor mounts, but I haven't been able to convince them to do that yet.

By the way, Daimler fired the tech rep that came out to inspect my truck last time, and the new one doesn't know when he'll be able to get down here. Gotta love that DC "marriage" that appears to have been made in hell.

In the mean time, I love the truck but I have to live with the vibration. I sincerely hope your problem is simpler to diagnose and fix than mine.

I think your problem is with the rear gears. I had a 1995 cherokee sport. I put a lift kit in and then ran onto tons of problems. I heard the same sound you are taling about. I thought it was the driveshaft and had it replaced. I needed it replaced anyway. I still had the rumbling sound. The only other thing it could be is the gears in the rear. Well that my 5 cents.

Thanks for the replies guys. Do you suppose it could be the pinion angle in relation to the driveshaft being set wrong? I dunno, just a thought.
