Subject: Durango/Dakota brakes IP: Logged
Message: Hey, I am not wanting to be a traitor, I do own a '00 4.7 CC LSD, Auto, Dakota. Great truck, great power and runs like crazy, but the brakes suck!
Now the other thing is, I want to trade for a Durango, do they have the same brakes?
Any help would be apprectiated.

Message: I have a 99 Durango. Yes Dakota and Durango have had the same brakes. For 03 both have 4 wheel discs. I know that the 03 Durango front calipers are new and larger. (Or wait for 04 The 345 HP Hemi will be the big motor)

Message: I had a 2000QC and went thru 4 sets of front brakes in 22,000 miles.
I had the opportunity to talk to the quality dept at DC on a business trip to the manufacturing facility.
The company that I work for supplies parts to DC, anyways, they know it was a problem with base material chemical composition of the rotor. Once heat is applied it warps.
The problem is mostly on the early 2000 trucks. The material supplier was dropped from use.

Message: Major, (cool title),
While this may be true, the 01's are having a problem too. Not only with warps, but the stopping power leaves a LOT to be desired. I think I'll go with after mardet rotors and pads as some have with good results, not merely matching the OEM, thank goodness.

Message: I also went to aftermarket rotors (original pads) and problems went away.
The QC guys at DC are quite upfront with questions, they are not into the public relations bull s%*#. They like to talk facts only.

Message: Aftermarket rotors are cheap, often less than turning. I replaced rotors and pads for under $50 on my 99 Sport 4x4.

Message: I too had the same problems on my 00 Quad, but I was also having trouble with the rear drums. So instead of replacing the drums and backing plates, I did the rear disc brake conversion from SSBC. What a difference they make to, because after you install them you have to modify the distribution block actually remove the piston that restricts flow to the rear thereby balancing the front, rear and reducing the strain on the front discs. After the install she'll stop on a dime and no warp or vibration yet. Search for my other posts on the subject for more info.
Z-Tube, R/T Rims, SSB Rear Disc Conversion, Alpine Head-Unit, Infinity Kappa Speakers, SilverStar Headlights, HO Cams & Intake installed.

Message: Mike how does your pedal feel, short travel and hard, or is the travel longer to feed the rear discs?

Message: I am doing the SSBC rear disc conversion soon... is it really that much better.... I got the front rotors and happened to get a great deal so I bought it... what do I have to do to the distribution block? where is it...is this the one on the rear axle or is it connected to the booster? I haven't really read up on the instruction yet... if you could provied any feed back I would appreciate it.

Message: What does the rear brake conversion cost? I already replaced the rotors on my Durango with Powerslots and Raybestos QS pads, but would like to try the rear conversion if it is not too much money and easy to do.

Message: The block is next to the ABS system under the hood. Which is located on the driver side next to the master cylinder. The pedal is more firm than before, not much. The kit is excellent I have been very impressed with it.
