Subject: Question on a vibration IP: Logged
Message: Hello
I have a 92 dakota 4WD 318. When I get the truck on the expressway I get a vibration. It vibrates more the faster I go. It starts at about 60 to 65. The wierd thing is I had a 91 v6 4WD that did the same thing I had the driveshaft balanced, the u joints replaced and the tires balanced. It did nothing to help. So before I do anything to this I was wondering if any body has had the same problem and knows what the fix is.

Message: does it feel more in the seat or in the steering wheel? makes a difference on where to start. what size tires and tread patern are you running? my 96 short bed 4x4 was fine till I put some used 30x9.50x15's wheel and tire combo off my buddys 98 gen 3 4x4. now at about 65 and up it has a slight shake in the seat. tires are pretty worn out from him doing burnouts. I traded 4 marginalchamp wheels off my 89 ranger with new tires for his premo gen 3 wheels with marginal tires. gonna go with new bfg's in the spring.anyway might be worth lookin to see what kinda shape your tires are in.also spin the tires slowly and see how true they are running, side to side and egg shaped. might just have a tire going stupid. hope this helps

Message: Buddy of mine had this happen in his ram turbodiesel. It turned out to be the bearing and seal on the transmission output shaft (2wd). I agree with Bill in that I would look at the tires first, then wheel balancing, the tranny output and transfer case. Since it is speed dependant it rules out anything in front of the transmission output shaft as that is where things become RPM dependant.
If you feel it in the steering wheel start in the front of the truck, if you feel it in your butt start in the rear... Good luck.

Message: Kevin
Unfortunately vibrations are some of the hardest problems to troubleshoot. But if this helps, I would start narrowing down the problem starting with the cheapest which will be balancing the tires and checking they don't have balls. Next will be repacking the bearings, then replacing the tie rod ends, then replacing ball joints. If after all that still have problems, the start working on drive shaft and related components.
