 Subject: OEM Skid Plates.......

When I got my '02 CC, I didn't get the skidplate group. So I went to Mr. Dodge Dealer yesterday and ordered two of the three. Now I find out that they're made of plastic. So my question is, would it be worth me paying for these things and installing them once they show up at the dealer? I do only light off roading, however that usually includes going over trees downed across the paths and small rocks. I don't do this at high speed either. So would these hold up to low speed hits or should I expect them to shatter on my first trip? Any input would help, as I don't have much time to decide whether or not to cancel my order and have steel ones fabricated (which would be nicer to have, but more of pain to get.)

The skid plates on mine are metal. Is this maybe because mine is a 97? I wonder why they switched to plastic.

I know the fuel tank skid is metal. Here's a thread that says Mopar is offering steel skids now.
The mopar.com site refers to them as metal also.
I remember someone remarked on the board that the '03's now have the metal plates so maybe, I dunno. 
I'd call the dealer  and have them call the parts depot to verify that they are indeed metal, I wouldn't waste the money on plastic,  just my .02.
I e-mailed several local dealers, they gave me the usual runaround and I haven't had the time to stop and verify this myself, sorry.

You will get some mixed opinions on the skid plate quality from Mopar. Some like the Plastic plates. Personaly I broke mine on the first off road trip and I was not even tearin it up. A couple centers and it was all over.
I know that DJ and I always say when we are out wheelin "glad I have solid protection underneath".
I have seen some comments about to much heat is retained with the steel underneath. I disagree 100% with that. If anything you get more air flow under the engine since the material is only 1/4" thick and not 2-3" thick and plastic(composite). As far as the weight of 96LBS for both. When I pulled off my broken Compsites after a few mud trips those composites were full of Hardened mud and I had to drag them to the trash pile because of the weight. This also clogged all holes for drainage and probably retained allot more heat.
Also if you hit a stump hard or anything the plate will hold but the mounting points will give way.
It all comes down to piece of mind. Evertime I hit underneath I do not worry, neither does DJ.
I know others here have them as well.

OK, so I just called up the parts department at Monroeville Dodge and told them I ordered skid plates from them a few days ago and that I was wondering what material they're made of. The guy checked it out and came back and said they're made of steel. So unless he's lieing or has bad information, Dodge does have steel plates available. Now.

That would be great if they did but know one has gotten any yet.
Please let us know if they are for sure or not.
Seems weird that they would state on there parts site that they are steel and not be.
