Subject: 180 Degree Thermostat

Message:
I have a 2000 3.9 litre V-6. I want to put the 180 degree thermostat in it. I read on the internet that lots of things need to be removed and the antifreeze drained to do this. What I see is, looking at the top of the motor it looks like a socket and an extention would do the trick without much problem. Am I crazy or can it be done. I know I'll lose a little antifreeze when I take the two bolts out, but then it looks like the hose will pull right up and pop the old out and put the new in. Am I missing something? Thanks

yeah dirk, i have read the same things, but like you I thought it looked like it would be a lot simpler than that. May have to try the installation soon. Anybody have a suggestion as to whether i can do this now or wait until after the winter months. I am in Indiana, but spend a lot of time in Michigan in the winter. Will the 180 t-stat have a problem with the low temps?

it should be ok, the 160 could lead to problems

Thanks, that's what I was thinking. Don't think I'd go as low as the 160, the 180 ought to be plenty for my needs.

The 160, unless you're in a year-round hot climate, can also set the code for engine running too cold.
