Subject: First Oil Change IP: Logged
Message: I just passed 1000kms and according to my manual it is recommended that the first oil change be performed at 5000kms.
I noticed that some people have performed their first oil change early.
Is there any real benefit to changing it this early or is the recommended interval sufficient.
I haven't overworked it or anything like that.
Thanks

Message: The benefit is that any assembly crap will come out of the engine sooner. I did my first change at 500 miles, then 1000, then 3000. On my wife's new jeep I did 1500 then 3000. I think it is cheap insurance...

Message: I agree with Chris, I changed mine at around 650, 1200 and again at 3000 and then every 3000 miles since. Better safe than sorry.

Message: Do the engines come with a break in oil from the factory? All of our tractors do, so i was kinda curious if vehicles are the same way. of course, Dakotas are gas and dont' get worked near as hard.

Message: Thanks for the responses guys. More frequent fresh oil changes in the motor certainly won't hurt things for sure. I would be doing it myself anyway so it wouldn't be too much of a problem.
Steve, I don't know if they do or not. Years ago motors did which required a "break-in" oil change. Now the manufacturers just recommend a regular interval servicing which makes me think it may be regular oil but I'm not sure.

Message: according durability studys conducted in the late 1950 and 1960 buy the big three 98 percent of the accelerated wear(break in) takes place in the first 600 miles. Something like 68% of the particles generated dureing this period are the sub 15 micron size ones associated with engine damage. So the most dangerios size particles are in their highest concentration dureing the first 600 miles. Most filter can only filter down to 20 microns. So it only makes sense to get them out of your crankcase as soon as the break in process is pretty much done. These small particle can weld themselfs to rings, cams, lifter..... THey also act as an abrasive to bearing. This information was first publicly published in a book titled (Drive It Forever) the author was saqorski(sp) the same last name as the famous avaition(helicopter) designer.

Message: Back in the sixties and early seventies cars came from the factory with oils that had very little (if any) detergents in them for a break in oil.
It was once a practice to break in an engine using Non-Detergent oil, it was believed that the detergents in detergent motor oils prevented rings from seating.
Now most every rebuilder is telling it's customers to use a cheap petroleum oil (which will have detergents) for break in and then switch over to a quality oil afterwards.
