Subject: Buying a new Dak...maybe... IP: Logged
Message: I want to purchase a new 2003 Dakota, Club Cab, SLT +, 4.7L, 5-speed and all the trimmings.
I am concerned about the lifespan of the truck, seeing as I read that the transmissions and brakes seem to die after the warranty.
Anyone have any recommendations as to extend the life of my possible new ride?

Message: I think you'd be very happy with the Dakota. I have been nothing but happy with mine. Really, if you take good care of it and do the basic maintenance on a regular basis you shouldn't have too many problems, I haven't had anything major yet!

Message: I have a 2000 4.7 club cab sport + with 5-speed. I can tell you that I do not know of many people that drive as hard as I, the 4.7 's first year was in 2000, also this was it's first year ever mated to a manual trans.
BUT I have logged 74k hard miles, on my 4th set of rear tires, and I still love it. It does not smoke and I have yet to put much $$ into it for repairs. To date all I ahve had go wrong is the door lock actuators, the pass side was replaced under warranty at 30k miles and the drivers side has been making noise and no longer locks the truck on its' own since 50k miles. I also fried the clutch and had it not work anymore at 32k, But I attribute most of this to learning to drive standard on a new truck with a V-8 (hence the tires).
I did almost forget, you are right the brakes suck. I warped mine at 15k while autocrossing it. I drove it like this until 60k miles when I finally broke down and got the powerslot rotors and raybestos pads, best $250 I have spent on the truck. Take all this for what it is worth, but If you have seen me drive, or have driven with me you would know how tough I am on this thing.
Chris
PS. that is why when it was time to get the wife a new SUV I did not hesitate and we jsut got her a cherokee with the 4.7.

Message: My truck has been nothing but good to me. Just minor stuff wrong since I bought it. I contribute most of my brake problem to the lift. But I am putting new brake pads and rotor on next week.
I also have a 91 Dakota and I havent had much problem with it. All that has gone wrong is the transmission did go out but that was after it had over 180,000 miles on it. I think it lasted pretty long. And the only other problem Ive had was a water pump.
To make a long story short, these trucks are built to last if you take care of them and not let them get run down.

Message: Yeah I think you'll be pretty satified with that Dak. I've got that exact model but its a 2000 and 2wd. I've been happier with this truck than any other i've ever owned. The gas milage is excellent for a V8 truck. I've got almost 40K miles and the only thing i've had to have replaced were the rotors. I just got a set of after market rotors and had them put on. I still had plenty of life on my old ones but the were groving. Other than that its been awesome. Make sure you get one built in the U.S. I've heard some are built in Mexico. Could be wrong though.
As we speak my carsound cat is being put on!!! Finally opening up my exhaust a little. This is gonna be nice.

Message: Awesome, I was probably going to slap some better rotors and pads on anyways, I need tight brakes. I know how to drive stick, so that won't a problem. That's good to hear, as I have a 1989 Honda Accord with over 150k miles on it, so I expect my vehicles to last.
