Subject: My gauges are freaking out!
IP: Logged

Message:
Every once in a while when i have been on long trips all of my gauges will start to start to jump all over the place. When i turn on my headlights they will all peg at the upper end. I have just figured it has been a heat realated thing thus far. It has only happened about 4 times including today, but today i happened on my way home from school (about 7 miles) there was no time for it to heat up. Short maybe? There are only 53k on the truck.

Anyone know what might be causeing this to happen?

Thanks
Brian

My guess is a bad headlight switch. Power is bleeding through and getting to the guages. More than what is suppost to. If it is only happing when you trun on your headlights that is.

If not that, then I would say bad ground. Look in the Tech Manual and find out where the Grounding points are in the cab and make sure they are tight and clean of rust, corrosion, and paint.

That's my 2 pennies worth.

On my last vehicle, my gauges started frEAkIn out right before my alternater went out. But that all happened in a matter of a few days. How long have your gauges been frEAkIn?

Doesn't sound like that would be the case for you, but their's always hope its a low cost somewhat easy repair instead of being some electronic chip.

The first time that is happened was last summer when i drove from Colorado to Georgia. is there a way to test to see if it is the alternator. I do have a pretty big stero system hooked up.

Well last night i started my truck up and i had the problem and it hadn't had anytime to heat up. I was driving down the road with no working gauges i hit a semi large bump and they all light up and readjust them selfs the correct readings. This just about convinces me that it is a bad ground or a short. Anyone know where the grounds are located. I looked last night but all the little ones appear to be secure.

Thanks
Brian
