Message: Alright - at 1500 miles - the dealer said i had "normal suspension" noise - at that time - i noticed that there is a "knocking" sound when i hit a series of bumps (like railroad tracks) and when i pull off of a road like into my driveway - i sometimes get a nasty "clunk" - i have noticed that others seem to have these symptoms and they've been directed to ball joints - there is another thing i have noticed with my dakota though - i have a slight amount of play in the steering wheel - do others have it and is it related to the ball joints? - also what do you do when you get your ball joints replaced - all you're getting is junk again - is there a way to still have warranty cover a permanent fix? - oh yeah - by the way - it's a 2002 dakota club cab with a 3.9 and four wheel drive

Message: pconn,
It could be your ball joints but with only 1500 miles on the truck that would be the fastest i have heard of them going bad. I have heard that the DAK's also have a problem with the steering arm. while in a turn and going over bumps like a curb going up into a driveway. There are numerious posts on here that talk about how to check your ball joints. It should be easy to figure out if its them.

Message: My Dak has only 1900 miles on it, and I don't have any weird noises or clunking going on. My truck's not a 4x4, though...it could be possible that you have a loose or defective suspension part. If you're hearing a loud clunk when you pull into a driveway, I'd bet that that's NOT normal. I've gone off before on why and how dealers try to BS customers into believing that all this junk is somehow "normal" the minute they drive their trucks off the lot, so I'll spare the diatribe this time. Your truck is under warranty...make them fix it.

Message: A shock rubber mount improperly seated will product a clunking noise. Might have them check that. With that low a mileage, ball joints shouldn't be bad.
