Subject: 9 1/4" Differential Question IP: Logged
Message: I want to replace gears in the rear end. I heard you need a special tool to adjust bearings through the axle tubes. Am I being misled? Or can something more conventional be used instead. Never replaced gears in dodge (only chevy). Help would be appreciated. Thanks

Message: Yes you need a special tool. I can't think of any way around using it either.

Message: you do need a pinion depth guage and a dial indicator, but if youve done gears on a chevy, its basically the same design/setup.

Message: Gear tooth contact greese and a dial indicator. Yes but the other one for the side bearing preload you can not get away with out.
