Every once in awhile I'll turn on my headlights, and only the parking lights will come on. I can diddle with the headlight switch, back and forth, over and over, and the headlights just don't come on. But then if I diddle with the high/low beam switch with the headlight switch on, all of a sudden the headlights come on and then work properly. Anyone have an idea of what's up with that?

Paul and Ken:

Before buying the new switch I would recommend spraying some electrical contact cleaner in the switch's base area where the mulit function switch arm enters the steering column. I tried this about 6 months ago when I had the same problems that you describe and it has been "golden" since. Thought you might want to try a cheap fix before buying the new switch. I just sprayed the cleaner in the area, messed around with the brights and dims back and forth until it swithced to highs and lows every time. It only took five minutes and is super easy. Just the remaining 2 cents I have!

Thanks for the tip cozwaldo. Same problem happening on my 94 Dakota. I was just about to replace the headlight switch as soon as it warmed up outside a little but decided to do a little internet searching first. I'll definately try the contact cleaner first.

the book you are looking at is wrong. to remove the headlight bulbs simply reach in behind the bulb and twist the retainer and slip it out of the way, then pull off the wires, then twist the bulb socket 45 degrees and remove.

now if you need to remove the headlight assembly, the screw that holds it in place uses a torx socket and is located deep in one of the seams in the assembly. BTW why do you need to remove it?
