OMFG..
What you see in the 4.7's oil fill cap is a nice mess of the water / fuel / whatever vapors that get boiled out of the oil...
As everyone knows if you blow moist air across a cold window water vapors will condense out..
Same thing happens in these motor when all those hot vapors getting pulled out of the crankcase by the PCV system to get burned meet the (relatively) cool oil fill cap.
Most motors draw these vapors up through a baffle inside of the valvecover, so you can't see the goey mess (plus the valvcovers are consistently hotter than the oil fil on the 4.7).
That little bit of goo doesn't mean much if anything.
The sludge that smokes motors looks and feels much like black jello, only much thicker, often heavily laden with carbon deposits. Lack of proper service is the #1 cause of that malady.

I read somewhere that D-C altered the 4.7 oil fill baffle, and a replacement part costs about $6. I noticed the "foaming" early in life of my 4.7, but not after 25K miles, ever. A by product of break-in? I change Pennzoil 5w-30 and filter every 3K mi.; 70K to date on '01 4.7.

Just changed my oil and the "milkshake" mess was there. Cleaned it off refilled with new 5W30 synthetic. Drove approx 60 miles and opened filler neck and there again was the milkshake and condensation. I believe it is normal as this location is not in the mainstream of the oil path and is not hot enough to get rid of the water that is a normal part of the combustion process.
I believe if DC put the filler location in the rocker cover(V6, 5.9) we would not be seeing this.
This is the first cold weather oil change I have done so its probably related to the cold as I do not see this when the ambient temp are above freezing!!!
Just my 2 cents.

i may be repeating a previous post (too lazy to look) there should be a pcv valve stuck in one of the valve covers a plastic type fitting with a hose that hoks to engine vaccume, take it out and shake it it should rattle if it dosnt replace it or just replace it anaways therere cheap. give it a try

My 4.7 had the 'improved' baffle in the filler tube. I took it out.
My 4.7, has yet to show ANY milkshake, etc. there anyway.
REMEMBER FOLKS! The baffle only COVERS IT UP, so you don't see it anyway! It does nothing to prevent this condition.
Like I said, fortunately, for whatever set of reasons, hell I don't know, mine doesn't do it.

Mine is the 4.7 and it hasnt done it either.
I purchased it new and now have little over 22,000 miles, I use haveline oil and my pcv valve is located in the oil fill tube unlike the pushrod engines which have it in the valve cover.

Hello fellow Dodge owners,
After cleaning out the fill tube only 2 weeks ago,
I checked it again today and already there was quite a build-up of "yellow sludge"..
I live in Montreal, Canada and unfortunately have to do short commutes to work, in below freezing weather. My engine does get warmed up but never for too long. Ideal conditions for cultivating that stuff it seems.
So today I removed the PCV valve and un-bolted the fill tube from the cyl. head to better clean it out, and noticed the sludge was limited to the fill tube area (plastic), none seen in the head or as deep as I could poke around in there.
Left out the baffle on re-assembly,
and will try insulating the fill tube someday
to see if it helps.

I saw this posted on another site.
This is NOT my truck.
"2001 Dodge Dakota quad cab (81,500 miles) pickup with the 4.7L.
The oil looked fine as it drained, but this is what the oil cap looks like."
Mobil1 has been used fairly regularly every 5,000 miles.
Not blaming Mobil1 at all. We all know this is a 4.7L problem.

Unfortunately, this is common with the 4.7L Dodge. The PCV valve is in the oil fill tube at the front of the engine, and especially during cold weather, the water vapor condenses and makes the foam. The only solution I've seen is to insulate the plastic oil fill tube and ensure the engine is able to reach full operating temperature for at least 15 minutes before shutting off. There is a TSB for 2000 and earlier engines, but it's just a scam as the only purpose for the baffle installed with the TSB is to hide the majority of the watery sludge.

Model year(s): 1999-2000
Description:A customer may complain of an oil emulsion accumulation inside the engine oil fill housing. The oil emulsion will normally be foamy and be gray or light brown in color. The emulsion accumulation will often occur on cooler engine surfaces, like the inside of the oil fill housing. Modern engine oils are designed to address the oil emulsion phenomenon. Oil emulsion accumulation is normal and will not damage the engine A new baffle and a revised oil fill housing cap have been released. The baffle and oil cap will help to reduce the amount of oil emulsion accumulation within the oil fill housing.
Details: If the customer has experienced this issue, then perform the Repair Procedure.
