Subject: Mid 11's mileage

Message:
All,
I have just bought a 2000 Dak 4x4, QC, LSD, 5.9L, auto, SLT package and I am getting mid 11's gas mileage on mixed highway/city driving with most of it on crowded highways. I just completed a tune up that included: cap, rotor, wires, plugs, K&N filter, IAT sensor move, TB cleaning, Rear end lube change out. My question is, since i dont have a base line for what my mileage should be with this vehicle is this a ok MPG? And what could i do or look at to get more out of it. I was thinking that i might have a partially clogged CAT but the truck runs pretty strong.

For a 4x4, QC, 5.9L, auto, Yes that is normal.
As for power, well, I believe that the 5.9 is a monster that needs to be unleashed. I don't know how much you want to mod/spend but some real simple things to do for power is a MP PCM and/or a bigger throttle body. Lot's of good info in this site, good luck.

yep, mid 11's sounds right, i have 2000 qc 4x4 sport with the 5.9 and that is all i get, i have done basically the same stuff you did and maybe gained .5 mpg from when i bought it. the motor was built for twoing and hauling, the best thing about it is you will still get that mileage even if you have a thousand pounds in the bed and pull a loaded trailer.

A friend of mine has a 97 or 98 Ram 4x4 with a 5.9 auto. He has a K@N filter, ram air hood with a cold air induction hook-up, and MP computer. He said his mileage was 12 mpg when stock. He claims that he gets 16 now. He said it will spin the tires now unlike before. Check with other 5.9 owners. The 5.9 is a good engine. It is just needs to be opened up so it can breathe. I am trying to get him to put on a set of MP headers now.

Another friend of mine has a 2000 Dakota RT. Mods are M1 intake, K@N cone filter, MP RT cam, aftermarket coil, cat-back exhaust, and Bosch Platinum +4's. He said that before installing the aftermarket coil and Bosch plugs that he could go only 65 miles on a given amount of gas where now he can go 100 miles on that same amount of gas. Sorry, I don't recall what amount he said that was he was using. I'll have to ask him. Again this is just one guys opinion. But for as long as I have known him he has always given reliable information. I don't think that you would have to use Bosch Platinum +4's. Just taking any sparkplug and grinding back the gound electrode far enough so the center electrode is exposed will do the same thing in my opinion.

This is my reply to a 5.2 question. The only real difference is the fan - not as big of a gain on the 01 as it was on the 99.

The biggest bang for the buck is to remove the crank fan and go all electric. More HP and MPG.
Next bump the timing up a few degrees. Then MSD 8.5 wires and champion truck plugs. Air filter does very little if yours is clean but will help some on top end, same with just changing the cat back exhaust. IAT relocate small improvement. 180 thermostat was a power loss on mine as was 3923 autolight plugs.

My 99 5.2 4X4 used to get 15mpg city and consistent 19-19.5 highway. I would not settle
for a power loss or mpg loss, if the mod doesn't help both I am not interested. Oh yeah, runs a lot quicker too.

My current 01 5.9 QC 4X4 is set up similar and gets about 14.5-15 mpg city 18-19 mpg highway and 16 mpg towing #1500 jetskiis doing 70 mph+ w/OD off. This was before the brake mod and I think I will see 19-20 mpg highway now hopefully. The 20mpg with a V8 4X4 has been elusive.
