Subject: Buying An R/T IP: Logged
Message: Ok so heres the story, a year ago I almost bought a brand new R/T, but i was looking at the s-10 xtreme at the same time and it was about 5k less so i decided to get that. (worst mistake i ever made) but I got lucky and it is about to be a lemon so im about to buy another truck yet again, except this time im buying used, im sick of payments and loosing 7 grand within the first year. Now I know I want an R/T but im torn between colors. Black, red, blue, silver. Black is prob the nicest but doesnt stay clean and hard to keep in nice cond. red is very nice but always stands out, now blue i like the midnight blue but its a very rare color and then silver i dont think was made until 2001 cause i have yet to see a 98 or 99 in that color. Please voice your opinion and sorrow for buying a chevy in the first place.

Message: well first of all i do like chevys i also was looking at a s-10 extreme but got a dakota 2001 because i wanted a v8 and also wanted to tow things and the extreme you can't do that,i like chevys very much and i do have a 67 chevy pk and a 67 chevelle ss i wouldn't take back buying a dakota, its patriot blue and i love the color last truck i had was a black nissan and it was to hard to keep clean, don't get me wrong so is the blue one but i do live on a dirt road, its got the 4.7 and i would also recomend looking into that, it is smaller but better on gas and still gives the r/t's a dang good run,the 4.7 doesn't have the hp as the r/t does but the trottle reponse is alot better and the motor is not as heavy i guess thats why they they give the r/t's a good run.

Message: Some things to think about when buying a
used Dakota:
1997-2000's have different interiors than the
2001-2003 models. Can't say one is really
better than the other, each opinion is different
on plus/minuses about the changes. Just
makes a difference for aftermarket parts - both
sets have plenty available they're just not
compatible.
1997-2000's have 6000rpm tachs, except for
some late model 2000's which got 7000rpm
tachs - there aren't many options for the
2000/7000rpm gauge cluster if you want to
change its appearance.
Mopar Performance Computers (best bang for
the buck computer chips) are only available up
to the 2000 model year. They are not (nor will
they ever be) made for the 2001+ trucks - you
must go with a more expensive aftermarket
solution for computer mods.
Patriot Blue (grey-blue mix) was only available
for the (2001?) model year
Atlantic Blue (mid-blue) is available for
2002-2003.
Silver is available for 2001-2003
Graphite is available for 2001-2003
The 5.9L V8 is only available in the R/T model
for regular cab and club cab configurations.
You can get the 5.9L V8 in the Quad Cab but
they do not make a QC R/T.
The 5.9L V8 was built as a towing motor - lots
of low-end torque but not much hp on the top
side. Only available with a 4-spd auto.
Average at best from the factory if you're
looking for something to race with, but there's
tons of bolt-ons for the 360 and plenty of R/T's
are in the 12's and 13's at the track with power
adders (Supercharger/N20/etc).
The 4.7L V8 is a newer OHC motor,
comparable HP but less Torque. Less
weight, available in a manual tranny, about
equal to the R/T in performance stock but
fewer aftermarket parts are available at this
time.
R/T package is a mix of cosmetics and
power... 5.9L V8, 4-spd auto, color-matched
bumpers, fender flares, 1" lower suspension,
17" R/T rims and tires, plenty of attitude.
Options you should try to get with the vehicle,
because they're either not available after
purchase or they're just more money you'd
have to throw in later:
3.92 Gears w/Posi
Overhead console computer (if desired)
Heavy Duty Service Group (better
coolers/battery/alternator)
Hopefully these will help you out a bit making
your selection.

Message: I think that if you are shopping for a used truck, colour should be low on your list of priorities. Pick a good truck and you will appreciate it just as much no matter what the colour. And by the looks of your post, your ready for several colours so to find one that you like, shouldn't be a prob.
Cheers!

Message: I don't know if your a stick man. New or if you can find used a 4.7 5spd with 3.92LSD gears. It's cheaper than an R/T better on gas and cheaper on insurance. With the same, if not better performance.
As for colors intense blue that's the color of my Dak I can't get enough of it, also in white, yellow. 2001+ silver or graphite.
Just my opinion,
Anthony

Message: i am a stick man but not in a truck, i had a 2000 honda accord that was a stick and i loved it except for that it was SLOW but thats another story. I have driven sticks in trucks and just dont like it. But thanks for the advice but i like the look of the R/T better id rather just buy it dropped instead of doing it myself. Cheaper that way. besides there are a few other differences.

Message: First of all, MY TRUCK IS A GREAT DEAL! under 16,000 miles, under warranty, one of 5 yellow regular cab R/T's made in 2000. 2000 is arguably the best year as there are no precats, a mopar performance computer available (and on my truck BTW). plus the 2000 was the first year to add the electric fan. 2001 got the precats and lost some aftermarket support in the exhaust and computer area, (important if you live in a smog state, but can be gotten around.)
On the topic of colors they only had 4 colors the first year (98), Intense Blue, Flame red, Dark Amethyst, and Black. In 99 they added the Solar Yellow. In 2000 they had the Yellow for a very short time and added Amber Fire, White and Silver. In 2001 they dropped the amber fire 1/2 way through the year as well as the Intese blue but added Graphite and Atlantic Blue late in the year. I'm not sure if they added Patroit Blue to the R/T's in 2002 or not but you can go to the Dodge website for the best information on the 2003 R/T's.
PS here is my R/T: http://www.rockymountainmusic.net/kota.html
and I am asking $14,000 for it.
