 Subject: 2001 4.7 Ping Update (This sucks)

For those of you that remember the spark plug pics I posted a while back - the problem with the bad plug was that the #5 cyl. was running lean. They replaced the fuel injector and the pinging got better (not as loud and less frequent) Going on that, the dealer replaced the other 7 fuel injectors and it only made the pinging worse again!! They checked the fuel pressure, fuel volume, and have updated the PCM with the latest programs with no luck!!
Now the BAD news, the dealer called DC again and DC said the only thing left to do is take the motor apart to inspect the cam chains (I think) They said that there are 5 chains in the motor and if one of the chains has problems or if one of the chain guides or tentioners (sp?) is broken it will throw off the timing. The dealer said that this involves tearing apart the front half of the motor!! This sucks!! I want the pinging to go away but I don't want my motor torn down to that level! I guess I am going to let them do it but I'll say it again, this sucks!! I guess if it takes care of the pinging I'll be happy in the end. The motor only has 25K on it!!!

What they're intending to do is no big deal, ("tearing apart the front half of the motor") I wouldn't worry about it.

Eallen, There is a chain between the crank
shaft and each cam. The passenger side cam
shaft has a sensor on it. If that one was off
time, you would get a disagree code (check
engine light). The drivers side cam would be
the first place to look.

I feel for you. I really hope they get this fixed. I could not imagine having to go thru all this trouble.
I've had my 02 QC 11 months with only 1,900 miles. I guess I better start driving it more to make sure nothing breaks.

There's a possibility that one of those new injectors is bad also. Just because it was supposed to be a new one doesn't mean it can't have a problem. It could also be as simple as a bad spark plug or coil. As far as the front half of the engine - that's just the accessories and the water pump/timing cover. No big deal.

Thanks for your input everyone!! I guess it's not as bad as it sounds. I just want this thing fixed!! As far as spark plugs go, I have replaced the factory ones with Autolite 3923's with no difference in the pinging.

Just got a call from the dealer... They tore apart the motor and said everything looks fine inside!! Now they have to call chrysler again to see what to do next!! WTF is wrong with this motor?? I can't think to too many more things that could cause this heavy pinging!!
Already done:
chanaged to autolite 3923's
changed from amoco 89, 93 to shell 89, 93
dealer performed fuel injector clean
dealer performed comb. chamber clean
dealer replaced 8 fuel injectors
dealer checked fuel press. and volume, both ok.
This isn't looking good.

He probly went back to the stock Champions and resolved the problem. Get those 3923s out of the 4.7L, bad medicne for them. if they want Autolites then 5423 is the one colder for the 4.7L.

I have to agree with old fool. I tried other platinum plugs and my truck ran like crap. Now i just run the stock champions

Yep, there are two names that go hand in hand, or hand in glove: Mopar and Champion. Don't know why, it just is. Mopar engines run best with Champion copper plugs.
