Subject: new engine performance ? IP: Logged
Message: Just hit 1200 miles on my 4.7 2wd auto and starting to put my foot in it. While it pulls great at low rpm, it really falls flat as it starts revving out. Don't know acceleration times, but once up to around 40 or so, it seems to be gasping for air. Is this a new engine thing, or do I need to get in line for the k&n filter kit and catback decision. Have the 3.55 ls rearend. Not saying it's slow, but hoping for a bit more high end performance than what is there now (isn't everyone after that?)

Message: It is gasping for air. There will be a K&N FIPK for your engine soon. There are cat back systems out now. You should opt for one of those. At least then you can exhale.....even though you can't inhale yet. Hopefully, by the time the K&N comes out Bruce Bridges at Flometrics will have a billet TB available for your engine. You'll breathe GOOD then! :-)

Message: When brand new, mine was smooth but slow. Couln't even break a tire loose on dry pavement. Didn't realize how slow at the time, but in comparison to how it feels now, it was slow. By the time I hit 5000 miles, it felt noticeably stonger. Then with the addition of a cat-back exhaust and a new air intake, it felt even stronger. Now (18,000 miles) mine feels almost exactly the opposite of how you describe yours. Below 3000 rpm it is stronger than when new, but there is a definite bump up in power from about 3000 rpm on up...feels like it is coming alive at that point. And I can burn the tires almost at will.
It will get better as you rack up more miles, and will be even better if you do a cat-back and air intake. I'd wait for the K&N setup to come out. The Airaid is okay, but the K&N gets rid of the stock airhat (with its little sound deadening chambers) and the flexible hose. The Airaid retains both of those. I'll be switching to the K&N when it comes out.
