Subject: Powertrax No Slip IP: Logged
Message: I've searched the archives, but I still need info. To anyone who's installed a No Slip...how hard was it? Was it a 2-man job?
Also, is the No Slip suitable for what I want? I don't race or go off-road much. I just want to be able to turn a corner on gravel or wet pavement without having to baby the throttle, and occasionally go in the mud.

Message: A no slip will make the back end even more happy in the rain. If your looking for less fishtailing look into different tires or a front wheel drive car.

Message: the powertrax rear isnt for the weak of heart should i say. its loud as hell snaps alot, clanks alot, clicks alot and annoys me and makes people thing there are things wrong with my truck when im driving in parking lots. its a great unit except for that, i didnt install mine i got it put in when my gear swap was done, but it was a B*TCH from what the mechanic told me (modded dakota driver) i did call powertrax about all the noises and the guy said to me "when you go to do a burnout or if you rip the vehicle sideways do both tires light up?" i said to him "i dont do burnouts" then he said "yeah right c'mon, do they both spin in the rain then?" i was like "yeah" so then he tells me "as long as both tires lite up then the unit works just fine no matter what noise it makes" so like i said its a serious mod and you'll definitley know you put it in. as far as traction, dry its great, rain, aww man be careful the truck turns into a fish!
hope that helps

Message: I thought the install was simple except I did it in cold weather. The hardest part for me was keeping my hands warm without wearing gloves. The instructions are very good and I thought the tech support was great. It takes two people to do the tests when you get it in, but that's about it. It only takes about 45 min. to get it in, but a few hours to let the RTV on the gear cover to dry.
I don't have any real noise issues. I can hear the rear tires locking and unlocking during a turn. It is a bit noisy in the first 50 miles and it has a completely different feel, but after the break in period it's all good.

Message: yeah after i changed to synthetic differential fluid the noises did go down alot
i actually have a movie of me taking off and burning first gear, and you can hear the rear clunking when the pedal is depressed. its not a great video, you need quick time to see it though, enjoy....

Message: Powertrax=junk
My brother had a Powertrax in his '93 Dakota
Sport 2wd with a 5.2 5-speed. It was a huge
POS in my opinion. In fact, it came with the
truck when he bought it (45,000) miles. It
snapped, banged, jerked, etc. In fact, it was
junk 5,000 miles later. The gear oil was FULL
of metal chips from the gears inside the
Powertrax self-destructing. He replaced it with
a Mopar Performance trac-loc differential
instead. It's a much better unit for street use.
The Powertrax made MUCH more noise than
the Detroit Locker I used to have in an old
Ford. ANY locker-type differential is going to
do wierd things in the rain and snow, been
there, done that, believe me.
FlameRed01 couldn't be more right about how
it works. I'd get a trac-loc or a REAL locker if
that's what you want. You get what you pay
for...
My two cents,

Message: I've had mine in my R/T for about 20K miles now. Works great, but as mentioned it is noisy. Install was a breeze, and can be done by one person with only two or three tools. Both tires light up whenever I hammer it going around corners. If you are looking for better traction around corners, this is not going to help much. On gravel, instead of one wheel spinning, both wheels will break loose and the truck will fishtail. Same on wet pavement. Personally I Like the fishtailing better than the one wheel burnies it did before. I havn't taken my cover off for about 15K miles, but after 5K miles of driving I replaced my stock cover with a chrome cover and the PowerTrax unit looked the same as the day I put it in. No signs of wear anywhere. I use Mobile1 synthetic oil in my diff, and since it's a locker and not imited slip, no need for friction modifier.

Message: HSKR,
Didn't you have the Trac Loc before you put in the Powertrax? How hard is the Trac Loc removal? The service manual says there are all kinds of special tools invovled to remove the clutches etc.....

Message: Yes, I had the factory limited slip in. Only tool required to remove the clutch discs and spider gears that make the limited slip is the wrench to remove the bolt holding in the center pin. Once the pin is removed, everything pretty much just falls out. Now if you are replacing the enitre limited slip carrier housing which you don't need to for the PowerTrax install, you will need some special tools.

Message: So, it jsut falls out? Hell the Factory Service manual made it look like you had to have this breaker device that sandwiches the clutch packs together and then the spider gears come out and then the tool is removed and then the spider gears have to be removed with this weird bar & all this crap..... hmmm.
Sounds easy all of a sudden.

Message: The powertrax is so much fun in the snow if you get some playtime with it. If your making gobs of power from a 2wd pickup I expect it is more challenging, but still an enjoyable experience.
