Subject: 1993 Dakota Transmission Slips IP: Logged
Message: I have a 1993 Dodge Dakota 4x4, 3.9L with 107K miles on it. The automatic trans has been acting up for over a month now. When the gear selector is in drive and while accelerating, the engine will over-rev for a second or two between shifting from 1st to 2nd, and even more so from 2nd to 3rd. From 3rd gear on, it seems to shift normally. O/D on or off doesn't make a difference, yet when shifting manually, the over-rev does not occur. I checked the fluid and it is filled, and the color looks good. Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be causing the over-rev condition?
Thanks for your help,
Mark

Message: When was the last fluid/filter change? I'd do it again.
Adjusting the bands is easy, but make sure to do it right.
Other than those two things... its gonna get pricy. Welcome to the world of the early magnum/tranny combination. sorry

Message: I just bought a 1993 Dakota. When the truck is put in gear it does,'t click in. So I'm driving and it won't shift out of first gear I can only go 10-15 mph. The guy told me that a Spring or something like a spring needs to be replaced. Should I keep and let them fix it or get my $ back?!?

Message: try screwing with the tv cable. check the color of the fluid. if it smells burnt, the tranny is on its way out... if not then something like the cable or something else is probably just out of adjustment. and btw, the "world" of early magnum engine/tranny combos is better than the newer electronic crap i think. they might not drive better, but they definatle last way longer.

Message: when you checked the fluid, did you check it in park or neutral? You did not specify. It should be checked in neutral (don't forget the parking brake).
You'll get differnet levels in park and neutral.

Message: "because the pump is not running in park."
The pump is driven directly by the torque converter hub. If the torque converter is spinning (engine is running) the pump is running.
Sounds like you may have a governor problem. Not quite sure what you mean by "doesn't click in" when putting in gear.

Message: not a pump thing, a valve thing. When in neutral the valves are open so more fluid is in tranny than pan. That is the proper way to check fluid level.
Could also be a lose band on the tranny.

Message: Adjust your TV (Kickdown) cable. 99% chance that's what's wrong! Your engine is not in sync with your tranny.
