I've read good and bad on the synthetic issue. Does anyone have any more advice on what they reccommend? 3000 miles on a 4.7L V8 coming up. I was thinking of staying with natural 5W, but is it OK to change to synthetic at any time?

Thanks,

Well, I was informed that you should wait a while before changing over to synthetics...Some guys believe that you should let your engine properly break in before switching over..I switched at 1000 miles...and found out this info after I changed it...Im thinking about going back to dino until about 10000...we will see..

hojo, don't keep switching back and forth if you have already gone to synthetic then stay like that!

I went back to some old posts here and it seems that waiting for the engine to be broken in is the best thing, although some folks have run synth since day 1 with no probs. I'll probably wait till 5k miles to switch. Thanks again...

As far as I know my dealer said my truck came with synthetic since day one. I heard that the engine wont break in properly if using synthetic since the start. I dont understand why. The only thing I can think of is it mite take longer to break in. Synthetic cant hurt your engine??? Why is it bad to go from synthetic to regular and back again?

You can switch to synthetic at anytime although you'll find the most benefits with an older vehicle. It has been proven to increase protection and enhance longevity in newer vehicles as well.
The reason you shouldn't switch back and forth from synthetic to non-synthetic? Synthetic oils seem to have a higher density/overall mass than non-synthetic. When running synthetic for a time, switching to non-synthetic will allow leakage through the seals. Although it wouldn't hurt the engine itself, you may notice some build-up/leakage after some time. Hope this helps.

It's all a matter of preference. I switched my 4.7 over to Mobil 1 10W-30 and the larger size Mobil 1 filter # M1-301 at 500 miles and everything is fine.

Are you guys doing complete changes, or just adding every so often? If so, what is your schedule using synthetic?

Thanks,

Most of the damage that is caused dureing breakin will occur between 500 and 800 miles. This is the best time for a first oil change. I am a synthetic nut!!!! My wife accidently picked me up 3 case of mobile one synthetic blend. I do not have the reciet so I will feed my motor semi synthetic for the first 3 oil changes. The 5W stuff has to go!!!!! Never Never put anything thiner then 10-30 in an engine unless you are useing it in Anartica. I do not like useing 10W-30 in an engine. I could not get anyone at Dodge to send me anything in writing saying that oils thicker than 10-30 would not void my waranty so it will get 10-30 for the first 36,000 miles. You know that Mobile 1 15W-50 will still pour and flow at -49F. If you drive mostly highway miles you can go 5000 miles easy with the synthetic and a conventional filter. If you tow alot or operate in a dirty envioment or do alot of around town driveing then stick to changeing it at 3000 miles intervals. I would rather error on the side of caution then reclessness.

The 4.7L is designed to use the 5w30.
Most new engines for passenger cars and light trucks are designed to use 5w30.

Wait at least 1,500 miles before switching over a new engine to synthetic lubricants. The seating of rings and wear in of other engine parts usually
occurs within the first 500 miles and should definitely have been accomplished by 1,500 miles on today's new engines. Under 1,500 miles you
should follow the manufacturer's recommendation for drain intervals and break procedures. Furthermore, waiting to at least 1,500 miles gives you the opportunity to assess the mechanical soundness of the engine and the
opportunity to report any unusual conditions that may indicate a latent mechanical defect in your new engine.

I changed mine at 3000 to synthetic and I change it every 5000 because I drive 30 miles one-way to work otherwise I would be changing oil every month and a half to 2 months and thats just going to work and back! My truck is a 98 and I am getting ready to hit 70000 miles. After this thing is paid off I am going to yank the V6 out of it and it will be the project truck!! I am looking at the 426 HEMI from Mopar Performance putting out 465 HP at the crank!!!

Patric Oday. The reason for the 5w30 is two fold. The first one is to meet CAFE standards(gas milage). The seconded reason is planed obsilesence of your motor. Show me one documented case of a motor going 300000 miles with conventional base stock 5w30 as it's only oil. Convential 10-30 driven at 70-80 miles an hour for any length of time will begin to break down rapidly. If you have any doubts try this. Put your conventional 5w30 in your engine and drive it for 3000 miles and then take an oil sample and send it out to be analyzed. Then repeat with a Mobile 1 synthetic 10-30. You will want topay close atneion to the ppm's of copper, tin, aluminum, steel and average viscosity. I have yet to see a motor run on 5w30 that was not smokeing by 100,000. 5w30 and 0w30 are fine if you drive you top fuel dragster 1/4 and then rebuild the entire engine between runs or if you want to artifical increase your fuel milage at the cost of engine life.
