Subject: More about fan removal / options?
IP: Logged

Message:
I have read up on the opinions about removal of the viscous fan. I have an '02 4.7 and HATE the fan roar on cold start-ups. It is irritating. Before I rip this thing off, I thought maybe I would see if anyone had experience with a replacement cluth that did not have the startup problem. I would actually like to keep both fans for towing and security of knowing that I do not have to rely on a relay. Also, I have warranty concerns with removal. Thoughts? Opinions? Thanks.

There is no startup problem. The clutch locks on cold starts simply because the fluid is cold and is very viscous. Once it heats up, it starts to slip and the annoying roar goes away.

My thoughts:
1) Carry a spare relay.
2) Install a 180 DEG F stat.
3) Jerk the viscous fan and if you're worried like I was, carry it in the bed.
4) If you have to go to a dealer, throw it back on, takes only two minutes or less to install. The dealer will never know.

Hope this helps.

LabRat,
Startup *problem* was a poor choice of words on my part. I meant to say the startup *feature* where my truck sounds like it is going to lift off and go into orbit for 30-60 seconds. :-)

Thanks for the advice. That is what I will do unless someone has found a good viscous clutch replacement. Hey, I can hope can't I!

What about installing an electric fan. Summit and Jegs have them.

Highly recommended, but you want what's called a puller, not a pusher. In other words, you need the type that mounts behind the radiator and "pulls" air thru it and the condenser. The nicer ones come with an adjustable stat.

That's funny how you put your clutch unit back on!!! hahahahahah

That pulley is pressed on the water pump and it's not going anywhere. Plus the reciprocating weight of the clutch unit is what you were trying to get rid of in the first place! hahaha

Trust me.... I've had no nut holding my pulley in place since April (about 12,000 miles)....

Try it.

I've had a parinoia all my life about not having my NUTS on. :-o I'll take it off, but loosing the fan resistance is what I was after, not just the clutch.

Thanks and Later,

You can always put the fan back on for towing.
Don't rip it off just unscrew it its easy to put it back on.

Well I did it on Sunday. No more viscous clutch, no more fan, no more dak going into space sound in the morning. My '02 4.7 had an electric on it already and it pulls air into the compartment. No problems with temp, even at idel for 5 minutes (it is getting chilly in Wisconsin).

Near my home is a little hill that I thought would be a good power test. So, before removal, I would set my cruise at around 60 mph. Just before the crest, my dak would downshift. Now, with the fan removed, the downshift does not occur. My conclusion from this is that I do have just a bit more torque going top the wheels. That is good!

Next weekend, the 180F stat goes in.

Before summer rolls around, I will install a seperate fan control circuit (from Jegs I suppose) to turn the elec. fan on at around 195.

I am pleased with myself now........ :-)

No fan on 4.7 for over a year.
No overheating. If the temp starts
to rise, turn on air, electric fan starts
and temp goes down. Did this in +90
degree temps.

FYI ... the nut to go back on after removing the fan is a metric nut ... off the top of my head I think it's an M30X1.5 ... or something close to that.

Just take the clutch assembly to a nut & bolt shop and match it up. ... much more peace of mind with it on there.

You don't need a nut on there. Look at the 3.7 in the KJ-same water pump with no fan or nut right from the factory.

Hey I need to replace my Waterpump on 99 5.2 l

Do I need to buy a fan wrench to hold pulley and loosen clutch nut or will it come off with a regular wrench on there?

Also, do I need a puller to get the pulley off the pump?

Thanks.

houptee,
No special wrench needed to hold water pump pulley. I just put a big wrench on it and gave it gentle wack with a rubber mallet. It spun right off.

erik,
Yep, the clutch can come off. no prob without it.

walt,
That's how I am running now. I will still add the extra elec. fan turn-on circuit. On the *rare* occasion I have to let somebody else drive my truck (such as when I have had a few too many beers), I don't want to have to explain it to them. (God, I hate it when somebody else drives my baby!)
