Subject: Question Fog Lights IP: Logged
Message: Hey all.. I just bought my 2002 Dakota Sport yesterday (9-25-2002).
How hard is it to add fog lights and change the front bumper? (I have little experience with working on vehicles :D) I would like the front bumper to match the color of the truck.
http://home.austin.rr.com/grimm74/truck1.jpg
Also what are some good auto websites/stores for modification/additions/repairs.
Thanks,
James

Message: I can give you a little advice on the fog lights. You can either get them from your dealership (expensive) or you can go to just about any auto parts store and get a set that will fit right in your bumper. If you look at it, there should be two circular indentations in the lower part of your front valance where the fogs should go. Those are 4" in diameter (at least they are on my 2001) and if you buy some fog lights with the same diamter, they will fit right in and look just as good as the factory. You can take a look at mine on my website.

Message: James, The front valance on a non-foglight
truck is different than for a truck with foglights. If
you buy the foglight kit from the dealer, the
foglights will not attach to your non-foglight
valance.Trust me I know. Just get an after
market set.
You can also buy a bumper cover, from Stillen.
It will cover your bumper and front valance. It's
got little flaired spoilers on it. It's made of ABS
and is easily painted. It's a nice look.

Message: Another benifet of the factory kit is that all wiring and the switch is included which makes for a VERY neat install.... but it does cost more than a box with some lights in it.

Message: You can very easily cut the holes in your valence by getting a 4" hole saw that chucks right in to a power drill. It is very easy to do as the inserts in the bumpuer will drill right out.

Message: I second that Chris. I love my Pilot fog lights ,only 50 or 60 bucks at Autozone and I use them all the time. They're great!

Message: Thanks for all the info... I think I'm gonna go try and do this. Now is this something I can do in a apartment complex parking lot? As you can see in my picture I don't have much space to work with. Also, there a no special tools required? Just need screwdrivers, dremel/drill right?
Also finally is there a big ole repair manual for 2002 Dakotas? I can only find them up to 2000. Gotta start learning the ins and outs of this truck if I want to start messing with it.
Thanks for putting up with my questions.

Message: I saw a factory repair manual on eBay a while back for all 2002 2WD and 4WD Dakotas. The top bidder paid $85+ for it. I haven't seen many around yet. Looks like they're worth a pretty penny. There are a few sites that sell them new, but I can't remember where I saw them. You might want to try doing a search on the web for 2002 Dakota repair manuals. I'll eventually get one.
You should be able to install the fog lights in your parking lot. I'm not allowed to do anything like that in mine or the management will write me up. I just borrow my parent's driveway when installing mods, washing or doing oil changes. You might want a volt meter for the install, but I don't see that as being absolutely necessary unless you plan on getting fancy with your wiring.

Message: Here is a site you can buy the 2002 Dodge Dakota service manual used by the mechanics, looks like it goes for 90 bucks:
http://www.techauthority.daimlerchrysler.com/
Just click on service manuals and scroll down until you see the Dakota.
I agree with what Mighty said about the installation.

Message: To those who used a 4" hole saw
Did you use the pilot bit with the hole saw or did you just put the saw up to the cut out spots minus the bit
Thanks

Message: Just a mention, the fog light kit from the dealer does include the switch, but it is not the switch you would get with factory installed lights, the switch in the kit requires drilling a hole in the dash panel adjacent to the head light switch and installing there.

Message: When I used the 4" hole saw I did not use pilot bit. I just placed it up to the hole and cut it. Not really a problem with the way the valance is designed. I am sure you could use the pilot bit if you wanted, but I didn't see the necessity of it.

Message: I agree Gentleman, that's why I didn't use it. You would have to get bit just right, whereas without it, you can just seat the saw right in the circular groove, about 10 seconds to get through it!
