I plan on getting a newer Dakota this year and have heard some of the "horror" stories of other Dakota owners on this site saying how they got their Dakotas barely up to triple digits only to have the limiter kick in. If I get a truck with a limiter on it, is there anyway to legally remove it here in California, and if so how?

First of all, what you're talking about is not a rev limiter. It's a speed limiter. The speed limiter can be removed by buying a high performance PCM (when and if they come with one for the powertrain you buy) or you can have the PCM that comes with your truck custom-flashed to set the speed limiter at 255. Cost for the HP PCM is ~$300. Custom flashing (when available for your PCM) is ~$500. The rev limiter is how high you can rev your engine (in RPMs) before the PCM will shut it down. For normal use you would not alter what the PCM has for this. You have to do a lot of bottom and top engine work to enable your engine to have a higher red line. Since the stock power curve falls off before your stock red line anyway, there is no point.

If they make one for your model it will raise your limiter by 1000 rpm.
