Subject: Brakes...not the usual question IP: Logged
Message: Are a part stores rotors such as pep boys better than the stock rotors I'm currently running? I want to go ahead and do a brake job but I don't want to pay out the a$$ for powerslots and I'm looking for a quality replacement. Will Pep boys or autozone fit my braking needs? Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

I have a 00 CC V-6 Dak, I changed the rotors & Pads 5,000 miles ago, went with the Raybestos from Pep-Boys, I live in NC but have driven a lot in the mountains of Pa. these rotors and pads have performed flawlessly, not the least hint of any warping

Message: Haven't had the need to do my Dakota yet, but every other vehicle I ever installed their brake parts on had no problems. No-name el cheapo rotors from some sweat shop in Taiwan better than factory? Go figure.

Message: I had Pepboys do my brakes. I got the Raybestos Quiet Stop pads and Raybestos rotors. They are much better than the factory rotors. They've been on approx for 10k. They aren't permanently warped, but do start to warp after they get hot from highway speed stops. Of course when I asked them to look at them, they were cold and said nothing was wrong. The left front likes to squeak in left hand turns now too when they get hot.
I may get them turned once and then try power slots if that does not make any difference.

where do you suppose the ones DC uses comes from?
Thats right, the sweatshop down the street from the one mentioned above. DC's put in a lower bid.

Message: I have been doing brakes for about 18 years. I have to say that I have had better luck with the aftermarket rotors from the discount auto parts stores than the ones from the dealer. The factory rotors always seem to warp or rust out quickly compared to the aftermarket ones.
I think Nate nailed it on the head with the statement that DC puts the cheapest on from the factory. DC probably saves a buck or two with cheap a** rotors and the owner gets to foot the bill for better ones at brake job time.
One other thing to note is pad choice makes a big difference in rotor life and of course driving habits, that goes without saying though. Semi-metallic pads seem to be the hardest on your rotors, but they usually don't coat your wheels with brake dust and the pads last longer. The composite or carbon matrix pads stop better and are easier on the rotors, but also leave that nice dust layer on your wheels.
Raybestos is a good name in brake parts. I have bought their products over the years and have had good luck with them. Powerslot has real nice stuff, but I share the same opinion of the cost. I don't tow anything and do mostly highway driving, so I don't need to spend the big bucks for stopping power I won't use. A penny saved is a penny closer to supercharger :)

Message: hey, watchout...brake on a 99 are totaly jacked up!
remember me from the ohio meet...I have a 99 as well. I am currently fighting a sevear brake problem...It turns out that 99 has different brakes from 98's and older and 00 and up. then they never used antirattle springs (clips) on the 99's which makes these dumb things jacked up! i have powerslots and hawk pads, rebuilt calipers and the brakes chatter really bad after i come to a stop and try to accelorate. I have had 5 pads on my truck...nothing works, two rotor...still nothing, and now rebuild calipers...still nothing...The dealer is helping me out by giving me clips from a 00 ang 98 as well as stock pads and all that...i'll find out early next week what the heck is going on. I'd leave them alone as long as they are working for now...find and exact setup on and exact truck of yours to make sure it works...99 is funky like that!

Message: Thanks Tim...I remember how bad your brakes were chattering...even running the exact same set-up as Bernd. Let me know when you get an answer through this post or e-mail. Thanks for the help, again. (Powertrax)

Message: sorry, i'm not on this site much since school started...i have everything figured out...
some of the 99's had their caliper/pads installed wrong. make sure the little arm (spring) on the outside pad is installed on the inside of the spindle arm. it naturally wants to be installed on the outside of the spindle. if you don't understand email me privately and i will help you out as much as possible.
Since i have gotten everything installed correctley it's an awesome setup...(hawk pads and powerslot rotors...

Message: thanks for the info Tim...I installed new rotors and pads today. The stock rotors warped to the point where it was hard to control my truck while braking. I went cheap this time with pads and rotors from carquest. (The other half of my tuition is due this week) If they don't work out I'll go to the set-up your using but as for now they're working great. It's so nice to be able to take it easy on the downshifting.
BTW, You could see the bow in my rotors from the warping. I think I'm going to send one to dodge and save the other one for the class action lawsuit...lol
