Subject: Oil Analysis IP: Logged
Message: I am looking for info on where I can send an oil sample to be burned (Tested), I have just put in the Wal-Mart brand, full synthetic and a Napa Gold oil filter, while I plan on going 6,000 miles with this set-up, I’d like to see how everything is going after 3,000 miles, just in case
Any help would be greatly appreciated

kota62,
Good to see that you are doing oil analysis.
Oil analysis is key to the longevity of engine life.
However, I believe the oil you purchased at Walmart (SuperTech Full Synthetic) is a Group III made by a Quaker State blending subsidiary.
--------------------------------------------------
I am NOT here to recommend a particular oil, or an Oil Analysis Company, but I would like to offer you some helpful hints.
At your next oil change I would recommend using a PAO/ester based synthetic (Group IV) vs. the Group III based oils. That's because a Group III based synthetic really isn't good much past 5k city driving and 8k highway, while a full synthetic (Group IV) with a PAO/ester base will go much longer.
So... you might want to spend a dollar or two more per quart for Group IV next change, but you'll also be able to pretty much double your intervals compared to the Group III based oils, SINCE YOU ARE DOING OIL ANALYSIS.
--------------------------------------------------
In an engine drain sample it is most important to NOT capture the first or last oil out of of the crankcase. We want a 'mid-stream'sample. What the engine is seeing. Not the first oil as it can be contaminated by settled solids and possible contamination from dirt at the drain plug. Always warm or hot, so we can get representative of crankcase oil. Plus, make sure the drain plug area is VERY clean. (I've been told that you can use either starting fluid or brake cleaning fluid to thoroughly clean the drain plug area).
Do NOT capture oil filter oil or anything other than mid-stream crankcase oil or captured oil.
Since we are only getting 4 ounces of the oil we want the most representative sample of oil flow possible.
This is what I've always been told by the experts.
--------------------------------------------------
I am hoping that someone else will recommend an Oil Analysis Company.

Message: Steve:
Thanks for the useful insight, I was considering Amsoil, but i had an unforseen death in my immediate family and ran the mileage way over what i had intended to drive, hence the trial with the Wal-Mart Synthetic.
While you're here, ! want to swap my tranny fluid with Amsoil as well, can you tell me how much i should get to do the full flush. (2000 V-6 4 speed Auto)
Thanks again, & I must say that i always find your hints useful, keep up the good work
