Subject: R/T 5.9 Performance IP: Logged
Message: I am wondering what the competition the R/T 5.9 Dakota has from Ford and Chevy? I was talking to someone who recently drove an R/T 5.9 and claims it is the greatest stock 2wd truck he has driven. Is it really an such awesome truck like he claims? What are some of its stats in terms of performance and most importantly, what do the run, $$$ wise?

Message: the R/T will probably beat a fullsize chevy and it will kill a s10. the ford lightning will kill the R/T...but with the money you save buying the R/T, you can tweek the engine to suck the headlights out of a lightning. price is between 18-25k, depending on options.

On the Lightning vs. R/T...the Lightning is hands down the faster truck. Most of the R/T people have spent up to $4000 on Superchargers, Nitrous, Cams, Heads, etc...and are in the low 13's and high 12's. Spend $800 on a Lightning and your in the same bracket.
My neighbor (and ex-R/T owner) owns a 2000 Lightning. $800 for a custom chip, modified Mass Air Flow meter, and K&N cone...he run's 12.8's all day. (No custom exhaust, no custom gears...just those three mods.)

Forgot to mention, he paid $28K for it.
So...
R/T: $24K + $4000 (mods) = $28K
"L": $28K + $800 (mods) = $28.8K
That's not a big difference for the performance. And the Lightnings have been hitting low 12's/high 11's with $4000 in mods.
They're both nice trucks...don't knock'em.
BTW: Some of the members from the R/T group came back from a "grudge match" (Lightning vs. R/T)...Lightnings beat them in the brackets. :(

Message: 28k for a lightning?...that mabe on the sticker, but all of the dealers that i have been to had at least a 5k dealer mark up. the lightning is a limited production truck, and here in california, people will pay the extra cash. It's an example of suply and demand (we know all about this, my mom is tring to buy a pt curser).
also if the R/T came from the factory with a supercharger, a regular cab would whip a lightning.
i hate chevy's, but at least john moss built the silverado ss with a normaly asporated engine and it produced more power than the supercharged lightning! so whats up with ford?

Several of the R/T owners have installed Superchargers on their engines and the performance is still in the mid to high 13's. (That's with headers, TB, either custom or Mopar PCM, MSD, and other minor tweaks.) The ones running 12's are also running aftermarket cams and/or heads.
Folks, the R/T engine is the same as in the Ram and Ram-Vans. It's a 360 workhorse engine...nothing special about it.
Would a factory S/C'd R/T beat a factory Lightning, that would depend on the driver, conditions, engine build quality, etc.
As for the Chevy engine...the LS1 is a very "adaptable" engine. ATI stuck one of their Superchargers on a SS/SLP LS1 and got close to 500HP at the rear wheels. That's a lot of power for a bone-stock factory 13-second car (w/o S/C).
Yup...$28K for the "L". He's not the only one getting them at that price. Ted (ex-DML'er) in Maryland purchased his '99 "L" for $26K. I know how they gouge prices in CA...I was born and raised there...it's all overpriced. (Just like gas...same stuff i'm using out here - Super Unleaded = $1.39/ga @ Chevron - 93 octane.)

Message: I heard just by changing the torque converter in the "L" that puts you in the 12's. I wouldent pay 35k for it (ca pricing) but damn, if your friend got it for 26k he got a good deal! if i walked in to a dealer and asked 26k for a "L" I would get laughed at. Also, If you are paying 1.39 for 93 octain, I really need to move. I'm paying 1.69 for 87! (The major reason that I have the stock ECU)

Message: I am assuming the L was bought used? That is about what I was looking to pay for a used one, but decided that 11 years driving Dak's would keep me in one =] I need a QC 4x4 more than I need a SC'ed L, but damn, I sure like them!
seems like they sticker for 32~ new, but alot of people get them at or below MSRP.
My bud in Monroe has a 2k. It is in the low 13's with only an airraid and a superchip. PLUS, he has tons of stereo equipment and a bed cover which means it is heavy, couldn't imagine what it would do with all that stuff removed... www.f150online.com has an excelent message board for the L's and you can see get some really good info.
As far as the R/T goes, I used to want one, now I am kinda over it, since I put the rims and flares on my truck.. I have the "look" with a portion of the performance PLUS I can get 20 mpg =) But, my truck will never be an R/T.....just a wannabe I guess

Message: Watch out for the chebbys. I got a fella that works for me with a 2M 5.3/auto/3.73. He ran 15.1 stock. He put Hypertech, Borla, and K&N. He is down in the 14s. I have seen 2 extended cab models with 5.3/auto/3.73+ catback, Hypertech, and K&N run 15.1. My son's '99 R/T CC has ran a 15.35 best in stock form. Lightnings are like Cobras - not enough of them to count. However Dodge is falling behind in the hp race against the average truck. They are on the right track with the 4.7 but they fell about 1 liter and 100 hp short.

The same evening that the Full sized extra cab chebbies were running 15.1, regular cab Gen III Dakotas (there were 6 of them) with 4.7 and 5.2/5 sp./3.90 were running 15.1-15.2. I seen it with my own eyes.

Message: nope.. they never will! =) sorry, I just like bashing chebby trucks.. I got so sick and tired of seeing them when I lived in Monroe. I am not kidding... you could sit at a light and 2 out of 3 trucks, no, lets say vehicles, were chebbies!!! mostly z71 and suburbans. It is like, in Most places, a caddy/lexus/benz is consider the auto to have..well, not in monroe. I say this cause my bud's dad is a doctor, ALWAYS had a Jaguar, then, one day he sold it to get a, guess what?, z71. Alot of doctors and lawyers and such drive them.. I just don't understand it.
that is the basis behind my "hatred" for chebby trucks. never had one, never will. Of course, I am not saying they aren't fast, but they just don't impress me.
keep in mind, this is all just my opinion and is said all in fun! no bashing please

Message: OK.....Lets get the record straight! The 360 is old technolgy. The 5.4 that the lightnings run is fords new technology. There old technology on the old lightnings was the 351 NA. I smoke my buddies Older style lightning. OK they have 380 Horse with the blower. The 360 is going away!!!! Enter the Hemi...Dodges new technology that runs what 345 horse or something like that NA. They put a Kenne bell on that beast and it was over 500 horse with just an exhaust. Cmon guys think about it. We're gonna smash lighnings and any other truck out there except for the SRT-10 but thats family lol and a whole lotta sports cars.
