Subject: Mobil 1 Questions IP: Logged
Message: Hey saw the Mobil1 10W30 being billed as a higher milage engine oil.
So, since the book for my '00 4x4 4.7 calls for 5W30, should I switch to 10W30 when I get "high milage" and if so, what is high milage??
Thanks!

Message: Thanks for the reference, but that topic does not address if changing to 10W30 from 5W30 at some point would be beneficial to my truck.
Anyone????
Also, today I saw some Mobil1 0W30 that was labeled for better economy. It claimed your vehicle would get better milage than using 10W30.
Anyone???

Message: I would consider high mileage to be in excess of 150,000 miles in a pick-up.
I use either the AMSOIL 0w-30, 10w-30 or 15w-40 Gasoline/Diesel oil in everything I own.
p.s.
I have a 78' Dodge D-150 with over 300,000 miles on the original engine .... Do you think that it has high mileage??

Message: For about 6-10 years all of you newer vechiles have been recommending 5W30. 5w30 produces less hydralic friction and gives better gas millage. This does two things. First it help them make C.A.F.E standards. Second if you are talking conventional 5W30 wich is what 90% of the population in the U.S. uses it speeds up engine wear out. THe more extreeme the spread on conventional oils the more VI have to be added. The more VI's the less oil in the bottle. The more VI's and solvents the more your oil will boil off leaveing deposits in the engine and wearing it out. In HWY driveing 5W30 offers very little protection and begins to break down within 30 minutes at 70-80MPH. Older vechiles had more sound oil recomendations. When you opened up the owners manual you saw weights from 5W20-20W50+++ listed by tempature so most older cars with high miliage probably recommended 10W30.You definately would not want to cushion old worn parts less. With synthetics alot of this changes due to their resistance to boil off, less use of VI's and no solvents in the formula. Just make sure it is a true synthetic. The only part of the 4.7 specificly clearanced for 5W30 is the oil pump the rest of the engine is clearanced about the same as any other old style V8. So their is no oil that has the aprpriate API rateing that will not funtion in your truck. So Mobil 1 0W30,5W30,10W30 and 15W30 will all funtion fine in it.You should select the oil that most closely match's the weather conditions for the next 3 months. The only time Dadge recomends lower then 10W30 is if temptures are expected to be below 0 degree's F "Dodge Dakota Service Manual". Here in Michigan I would typical run 15W50 in the summer and 10W30 in the winter in my vechile(lots of HWY driveing). In my wifes vechile I run 10W30 year round because most of her driveing is around town and it would not get hot enough to ever get 15W50 up to operateing temp. When I lived in Texas and In Georgia I could run 15W50 year round. I hope this helped some. I over simplified alot of stuff.

Message: Sandman, THANK YOU!
It may have been simplified, but for someone who knows almost nothing about this (I'm trying!), it was exactly what I needed to know! Looks like 10W30 may be a better choice for me and my truck. Fully synthetic of course.
Thanks again
