Subject: Awfully bumpy ride..at times
IP: Logged

Message:
I've got a 99 Dakota 4X4 5.2L auto, 43,700 miles. Most times the ride is a bit bumpy but tolerable, I attributed it to the rough ride that comes with having a truck. But when I get out on the freeway, it gets pretty shaky between 60 and 70 MPH. It seems to be affected by the type of road surface (smooth asphalt is usually ok), and when i get onto those concrete sections of roadway, it bounces up and down so much I cant even readmy instruments. I just replaced my shocks with Monroe Reflex's so I would assume they arent the problem. Any thoughts on why it is so bad? It feels some times like the truck is just gonna break apart if I dont change lanes. When it gets really bad, speed doesnt really make a difference. Thanks!

Tires, Springs, shocks. Those are the 3 things that come to mind when I read your post. I'm not familiar with the Monroe Reflex, but assuming they're the correct length, I'm sure they aren't the problem either. That narrows it down to tires and springs. Check 'em out and let us know.

Good luck

I thought tires too, but I had them aligned and balanced right after I got the truck to no avail. Also it does ride smoother on smooth asphalt and/or slower speeds, which would also kinda rule out the tires (right?). Springs I hadn't thought of. I do notice a squeaking when I hit bumps, but I only hear it when I listen for it. Could that be related? Thanks!

Had my springs checked at Dodge not too recently when hearing squeaking noises. Bed would shake sometimes when driving. Dodge fixed squeaking noise and truck rides smooth but now I need to get an alignment due to pot holes. God damn Alaska =(

My '01 qc does exactly the same thing, and the only cure I've stumbled on is tire pressure. When pressure was on the low side, maybe 32, the ride was good, but it would bounce like you described on concrete slab. At about 35, firmer ride but the bounce is way less pronounced. Guess the tires are acting like undamped shocks when too soft. Whatever the case, I keep the tire pressure up or the family ain't happy on the freeway!
