Subject: brake problems again...please help!!!
IP: Logged

Message:
well, as some of you know I have had nothing but problems with my brakes. and the story continues! just last week I replaced my rotors (w/ powerslots), rebuilt calipers, and new hawk pads (directly from hawk). I broke them in all last week (didn't drive it to work and all that). They worked great and was really excited thinking I fixed the problem for the final time. Finally, today I felt comfortable enough to take my truck to work and what do you know, they are chattering again! When I use my brakes to slow down, the chatter when I speed up and when I stay under 30mph. Now I have had 4 previous pads on this truck and had problems. finally said screw raybestos and bought these hawk pads. this is my second set of rotors and first time for rebuilt calipers.

The brakes only do it when they get hot. if I sit at a long light and don't press on the break they don't chatter. Any help would be great, thanks!

I know when I replaced everything I did it as good if not better than any shop!

A few questions to provoke thought...

Can you explain (describe) what you mean by "chatter"? (I get a slight squeel when first breaking in damp weather)

Did you handle the new rotors with GLOVED HANDS so oils from your fingers would not spoil them? (any traces of oils can become embedded into the metal of new rotors and really mess up the seasoning/bedding in)

Did you use copious amounts of IPA (Isopropol Alcohol) or some other brake grease-remover?

Did you fit the shims (that eliminate pad slop) on the proper edge of the pads?

Are you sure that you have given enough time in one week to have everything 'seat' properly? (at LEAST 600 miles)

What kind of driving are you doing? (highway or stop-n-go)

ok, i mean "It chatters" the brakes are pulsating (not like warped rotors). not squelling noise...just chatter. it only happens when the brakes get hot and i drive slow (0-30mph).

another questions is that my lug nuts were torqued down correctely. tight but not crazy tight. well, after about 30 miles (most highway) my lug nuts are not crazy tight. almost like the heat tightened the lug nuts. It was not nearly that tight before...this morning

I never touched the surface of the rotors. I also used brake cleaner (lots!).

shimms are premounted...

i had about 150-200 miles of braking them in (just taking them out running for about 30 minutes slow and then faster. broke them in per hawk performance (jerry). I cruised in the truck for about 1 hour on sunday (30 miles). drove today for the first time in traffic and all that. it was very cool! (columbus, OH) today. no more than two stops from a max speed of 25mph (my neighborhood), and 1/2 mile drive to a stop (max speed of 40 mph). then stopped and from that stop on it chattered! all were very easy stops with about 50-55 degree weather. those brakes shouldn't have gotten that hot! that is absolutely rediculious!

any more suggestions.

Are you sure the "chatter" is from the front?
try driving it on a back road (away from other traffic) and using the parking brake to slow down. if it "chatters" while doing this, the problem is in the rear(parking brake only operates the rear brakes)

If you haven't already replace rear brakes and get the drum/rotors turned. Also bleed the system good to get any crap out of the system.

ok, I can tell you that is not normal!!! brakes are supposed to be absolutely quiet (or a slight noise when moist). the reason I messed with my brakes this time was my pads were cracked and they squealed constantly, after 1 year of great performance. I can tell you there is something definitely wrong with these things, and for that matter yours and your friends.

I can guarantee they are in the front...the back are working fine.

I'm not ignoring your suggestions, I agree they could be the back (but when you drive my truck you can tell it's the front). plus since nothing has changed in the rear it has to be the front.

It doesn't chatter when I am braking but rather when I am speeding up, after the brakes heat up from a stop.

I'm thinking of something more major wrong with the whole setup.

Well you replaced all the front brake stuff including the calipers. There isn't much else it could be, thats why I suggested the back. Its cheap and easy to change the rears, I mean how many times are you gonna put new pads and rotors on the front. However if your sure its the front, it could be the proportioning valve or the master cycl.
