Subject: Engine Rebuild IP: Logged
Message: I have been throwing around the idea of rebuilding a engine with my dad as just kind of a whenever there is time project. But i've got a few quiestions first. Typically when you rebuild a engine what kind of life does it add to the engine ie (mi)? Does rebuilding a engine add enough miles to it to justify the effort? How does performance compare to when it was new? I was lookng at a 318 out of a old dakota with over a 140k on it. If you guys have any tips or input i would really appreciate it.
Thanks
Brian

Message: performance is endless when rebuilding it yourself, you can d whatever you want with it if you have the money.
It depends on how well the rebuild is, and how well you take care of the motor. (maintenance)
and it's up to your own discretion whether it's justifiable or not. You probly won't get a whole lot if you turn around and sell it, but if it's something that you really wanna do and have fun with the truck, it'll be worth it.

Message: As long as you use a good machine shop and use high quality parts you should expect at least OEM life span. The excemption to this would be if you start going with alot of HP parts. Try WWW.notherautoparts.com they have the best kits going. Everything is name brand ho junk. They use felpro gaskets, TRW, Federal Mogal, Clevite, Sealed power, mellign.... name brands. The only time I would recommend against rebuilding an engine is if it is a Magnum Dodge V8. The prices for rebuild kits for these engines are insane.

Message: What these guys have said is true. If you pay for quality work...reboring if necessary, valve jobs, squaring the deck, whatever...and then install top of the line, quality parts, take your time and be extremely anal about doing it right, and learning FIRST if you don't know, a rebuilt engine should last many thousands of miles with normal care. I wouldn't do it if my primary motive was to save money, though.
