Subject: lower ball joints ( a pain in the ass) IP: Logged
Message: Unlike the uppers. when I ground off the rivit heads, the damn things will not punch down thru the assy. I guess that is what everyone meant when they talked about pressing the lowers out. I thought the pressing was in reference to the ball joint itself, not the rivits. Now I hope the damn thing holds together and makes it to work tomorrow so I can take it in after work, remove the lower control arms and press the rivits out. Wish me luck!!!

Message: when I did the uppers on mine and ground off the rivet heads, they did not simply punch out. I had to break out the drill and drilled the rest of the rivet out. you might want to try that but just be careful not to drill the hole out any further.

Message: born2steel21, I am going to assume that you are with an Armour Division? What are your thoughts on the New and Improved GM LAV 3 and the bright idea to replace large chunks of our Armoured Divisions with them. So far all of the test results from Ft. Knoxs have been rather negative. What is your take on all of this? I think it is a stupid idea to build lighter smaller vechiles just because aircraft can carier them. If you need a tank build an airplane big enough to carry them if yu need a LAV call the Marines.

Message: You dont' need to remove the lower arm to press the ball joints. To press my 92s I bought a press at Harbor Frieght that amounted to a giant c clamp with collers and such. It worked perfect for the lower ball joints and was around $30.

Message: I'm with you sandman...I don't like the military's idea of this new and improved, lighter and faster, fighting force. I personally think its a bunch of crap. I haven't had any experiance with the GM LAV 3, but all I've heard is, like you said, bad things coming from it. I remember reading that when they first started testing it that a main gun shot over the side was actually blowing the LAV over on its side. I believe it considering it provides a pretty good jolt to 70 tons when fired from the tank. I think they should just can their current plans and start trying to resolve all of the electrical problems with the M1A2 and A2SEP.
