Subject: Air Bag Deployment IP: Logged
Message: I have a '97 Dakota V8. Anyone else had their airbags deploy without warning? I was doing 65 mph on the freeway when both bags deployed. No accident. No bumps. Just a loud bang when they went off. Fortunately, the road was straight and I was able to safely move to the shoulder and stop. By the way, the blast will numb you for a few seconds. Had I been in the middle of a turn the outcome could easily have been very different. Took it to the closest dealer. Since the warranty period is over the cost to replace the bags is over $3,000. I passed on that and glued the dash parts and steering wheel cover back together and left them like that. Also, they could not determine what caused the bags to go off. I reported the incident to Chrysler and the National Highway Traffic Safety Organization. After eight months, no response from either. So I'm wondering, am I the only one?

Message: A very close friend who owns a body shop told me several months ago that this is happens frequently among all brand vehicles.

Message: I think i remember seeing a quiet recall on here about that. Something was breaking off inside the steering wheel or something the like. I can't imagine that would be much fun to have happen.

Message: I bet if when that happened you or someone else was injured or killed because the accidental deployment caused an accident there would be one hell of a lawsuit against Dodge.
