Message: hi all,
i was wondering if anyone had any ideas of a way to mount a CB antenna in the Radio antenna location. I just want to take out the radio antenna and replace it with the CB's. I dont really like the look of more than one antenna so any help will be greatly appreciated.

Message: yah ive seen those converters that allows you to use your radio antenna for your cb, but i heard they are not very good. is there any cb antennas that can fit in the radio antenna hole mount? I was thinking of having a cb antenna mount in the engine compartment under the location of the radio antenna, then unscrew the radio antenna and drill out the radio antenna mount to the diameter of the cb antenna. then slide the cb antenna through the factory radio mount into the engine compartment where the cb antenna mount is. so all in all, it will look like its a regular radio antenna but is actually a cb antenna. I know my description sounds funky and is hard to understand. but let me know if you understood that.

Message: The best antean for CB/11 meter band is 102" SS Whip. If you can not live with that get a 5' firestick or a Wilson 1000 magnet mount. Idealy if you have anything other then a 102" whip you want at least 3/4 of the antena above the roof line. You realy should not try to butcher your truck to make a poorly designed ant. work. If your idea fails you are left with a big hole in your fender that will not accept the factory antena any more. You can spot a non-OEM antena a mile away!!! If you hate two antean's then get a good magnetic mount like the Wilson 1000. I have tested mine well past 120MPH and it stays on.This way you can take it off anytime yu are not useing the radio.

Message: Is the MHz on the radio match up to that of the CB. Also what about the SWR's will they be ok. What about if you are running and modified rabio or with a little extra power. I'll stick to my Wilson 1000 and un screw the whip when not using it.
I thought about how mothers feed their babies with tiny little spoons and forks, so I wondered what do Chinese mothers use? Toothpicks?

Message: The wilson 1000 is the best choice for all around cb use including upper and lower channels. It gives a very good SWR reading when set up correctly. True the 102" whip is the exact length needed for the cb range but they can be a pain since they are that long, that's why some antennas have a coil or load midway up in the whip to simulate the length that is lost by using a shorter whip. Avoid ANY antennas from radio shack or any cb to ant converters, just remember you can have the best cb and a crap ant and sound like crap, but using a quality ant and a crap cb will still work better. Personally I think the best way to mount a wilson 1000 is the thru the roof mount that way their's no wire to see and when your not using the ant you unscrew it and put the cap on, drilling a hole almost 3/4" in your roof may be hard to do for some people, I haven't done it yet, so no cb in the dak for me yet. Need any other help e-mail me. HARDBODY is also my cb "handle" good luck

Message: I just found a cb ant mount designed just for the newer style rams and dakotas (gen3) I don't know how to post a link so I'll type in the web address. http://www.alfenterprises.com/dodge_ram_hood_mount.htm This mount looks to be a very good idea no holes to drill either. Check it out plus it's cheap,

Message: some cb stores carry an inline plug so you can use your radio antenna as acb antenna and it doesn't interfere with the radio. The only draw back is you cant amplify it.

After running CB's in my trucks for the last few years and then getting a Dakota, I went out and bought the good ole toolbox for my bed and mounted my 2-Watt Curly-Q on it and ran my cables to my "kicker" and then into my truck to my modded RCI-2950. Only real thing I found difficult was finding a place to mount the radio without drilling any holes that show.
How about a few installed CB pics guys?

Message: Not real sure if it will fit but I tried positioning my sommerkamp radio ( export version of a rci 2950 with extra work done) under the dash right on top of where my cup holder console mounts, ( 2001 dakota) it looked like it would fit I didn't try to mount it yet as I have to get the display fixed first. But a smaller cb such as a cobra or uniden , a PC-66 when peaked will really get out with a good antenna! Also have a rci 2970 but that would probably have to go on the glove box like I had it in my nissan pickup. I talked to Wilson antenna today about the possibility of using that ram/dakota mount with their wilson 2000 trucker ant, for those who don't know what it is it has a rigid base than a coil than a whip on top of the coil. But they said the coil is designed to be above the body so I guess that won't work oh well...

Message: Wayne how far above your trucks roof do those 3' tall antennas stick up? Any reason you didn't go with a 4'? And did you try the thicker fiberglass antennas such as the wilson silverload or firestick 2, I know you mentioned too much noise? Thanks, like I said earlier I think the best thing would be a centrally mounted ant ( mid roof) using a perm mount ( drilling a hole) but it's that drilling into a new truck that stops me LOL

Message: I've got a full foot above the roof, the whole loading coil. I also have a 4' K-40 Power Whip. The larger diam. whips create a lot of wind noise, it's not so bad behind the cab, but out front is a pain. I'm a big fan of the K-40 baseload and would have put one on top, but I just couldn't bring myself to drill a hole in the roof. BTW, the K-40 radio fits between the ashtray and shifter.

I'm running a pair of Firestik's Dodge fender mount (part #MK184R), and a pair of Firestik's 3' antennas. The driver's side is my CB antenna while the passenger side holds my scanner antenna. They are both very clean looking, and do not require any drilling.

Message: Foleyr that setup for your antennas will work ok as long as the antennas are of the no-ground type, or if you run a ground wire from the antenna mount to ground. That tool box looks like it's made of plywood?? If so your not getting a ground thru the ant mount and your swr's may be higher than they should be. Just my 2 cents

Message: I was trying to get away from having to drill any holes in the dash. Since I am sporting an auto, I was thinking of building a bracket that will mount using seat bolts in the center and extending up from below the front center of the seat. Wanted to see other Dak mounted radios first in case someone had already explored this idea and overcame the install.

Message: hey all,
i just wanted to let you know that i finished my CB install. i started with a radio shack trc 504 cb and it mouted to the dash with the exsisting screws, no drilling involved (i was actually quite surprised). I mounted a Firestik II adjustable antenna to the Firestik dakota hood mount (once again, no drilling invovled). My CB had PA capabilities so i mounted a weatherproof PA speaker under the hood. Everything came out magnificent with absolutley no drilling. Now all i need to do is get a SWR meter and tune everything nice and clear.

Message: I talked to a fellow dak owner at the orlando meet this past saturday nite ( if 7 of us can be called a meet) he brought something to my attention that was kind of interesting, he has one of those satelite radio tuners in his dak and the antenna is on his roof but what I found interesting is that he ran the cable thru the hole for the 3rd brake light. I removed my 3rd brake light tonight and their's definetly enough room to pass a cb cable/connector thru the factory hole into the cab. I like that idea since you could run a magnet mount antenna and only have to see a small length of coax. The bad thing is my good radio, a rci 2970, won't fit under the dash without blocking the little cup holder console, I had thought about removing the console, making some brackets and moving the console back toward the non-moveable center section of the bench seat, but even doing that the radio still blocks most of the console I don't wish to lose my cup holders. My other radio, an export version of an rci 2950 may fit if the plastic trim under the dash can be removed or cut since the radio is fairly deep, oh well another day and I'll look into it again, congrats on your install fred
