I finally decided to dump the stock tranny fluid in my 02 Dakota 4.7 5-speed (after 7K miles) in favor of Redline MTL. I've had Redline tranny fluid in my last 2 vehicles (Maxima and Miata) and I hoped for similar improvement in overall shift effort and quality. Man, was I pleased! No notchiness, clunking, weird noises, or ratcheting. Just smooth shifts with equal effort from gear to gear and I can finally shift down to first gear without being completely stopped! I paid $10 a bottle (2 bottles needed) for MTL plus $8 for the massive 17mm hex tool from Sears and the whole job took me 20 minutes including test drive and cleanup (lots of cleanup - man that MTL is slippery when you spill it!).
I can't wait to drive to work tomorrow!

I agree. I'm running it in my Dak and in my Dad's 95 Dak 318 5 speed. Made a huge difference in shift quality. And per Red Line, it has almost no measurable sulphur content so it is entirely appropriate for use in the NV3500.

If it works for ya thats great but just what viscosity is the Redline MTL?The nv-3500 does NOT use gear oil in it.I have been using the Amsoil HDD5-30 with good success also.You can use a 7/16 bolt with 2 nuts to remove the hex head plug on the trans.

I believe it comes in an 80/90 or straight 90 weight. I'm running the 80/90.

MTL is a 70W80 GL-4 gear oil (SAE 5W30/10W30 engine oil viscosity) designed for use in manual transmissions and transaxles. Provides excellent protection of gears and synchronizers and its balanced slipperiness provides a perfect coefficient of friction, allowing easier shifting.

I got this back from NEW Process the makers of the NV-3500.
The recommended lubricant is Synchromesh Transmission Fluid (STF) for
Manual Transaxles/Transmisions. Using ASTM Test MethodD445, Viscosity
should be 35 cSt min at 40 degC and 8 cST min at 100 degC.
We use Texaco 1874 MTX Fluid 12550. It is a non-synthetic.
90w oil sounds to thick but if it works then great,according to Amsoils cross-reference that texacoMTX oil is Amsoil HDD5-30 so that is what I went with,there ws a post here where someone used mobil-1 gear oil in the nv-3500 and it shifted badly and was making noise

I use the HDD 5w-30 from Amsoil, I tried the Mobil1 5w-30 and it did not work as well as the Amsoil.
** The Redline MTL is NOT the right lubricant **

Correction :
According to the Redline info that I have on file, the Redline MTL is a 70w-80 GL-4 oil with a SAE enine oil viscosity of 5w-30/10w-30. So Yes, it can be used.
The Amsoil HDD 5w-30 is also a very popular oil that is being used by myself and several of my DAK owning brothers and you can pick it up for about $8.00 qt.

I've only heard from a couple of truck owners that did not like the Redline product after it was installed ... but this is not to discredit Redline. I've heard of a couple of Amsoil users stating they did not like Amsoil either, but the vast majority would rather "fight than switch back".
Perhaps I showed my age by borrowing from an old cigarette commercial.

Thanks for all the replies to this mail. I did alot of research into this fluid change as I didn't want to harm the tranny in my truck, but I did want to get rid of the notchiness that the truck has had since new. Like I said in my first post, I've had Redline fluid in 2 previous cars and although I've never used Amsoil, I'm sure that the improvements would be similar. I just took my 15 mile commute into work and the truck is beautiful. No more stiffness when the truck is cold (I live north of Boston and I noticed on cool mornings that it shifted more stiffly than when the truck had warmed up) and most importantly - no problems whatsoever.

I must agree, jsut changed mine last weekend as well... much better. I have a 2000 4.7 5-speed with 72k miles on it and what a difference, I did the trans, the rear-end and changed teh power steering fluid (got too low somewhere around 50K miles and burnt up on me)... all that and new oil and recent coolant to boot... My baby is a well oiled [ :-) ] machine....
You are right, it just shifts smoother... especially on those cool mornings (northern CT)...

I replaced the fluid in my tranny(98 5.2 with the nv-3500) last summer with the mopar reccomended stuff and I think that was $12.00 a quart. Bought 3 because I have a slight leak on the top of the tranny between the two halfs, only used about 1/8th of a quart in 30k. Looks like the others are cheaper and perform better. Wish I would have known this then. Oh well nice to know for when I pull the tranny to fix that leak. Most likely will wait until i have to replace the clutch. Later,

I do alot of work with die hard Corvette owners and racers. I have turned alot of owner that have the old muncie transmissions in their vettes to Redline MTL. Origanaly the Muncies came with Whale oil as OEM fill in the trany and the rear diff. The only fluid I can find that replacates the fell and operation of the Whale oil in these tranys is Redline MTL. I have not had one owner that has not thanked me after they replaced their brand with Redline MTL. Tell you what yu have not smelled anything until you smell the origanal Whale oil out of a rear diff. It makes modern gear lube smell like CK1.

My 2WD 99 Ram 1500 also has an NV 3500, not sure what lube was in there but it died. 4th gear was the only one working. I removed it and it sounds like there's some parts loose inside. Tryed to take it appart (following the technical instructions) but I can't get the two halves to separate more than 2" ?!?!?! ant ideas out there?
