Subject: I think I'm an idiot!! IP: Logged
Message: OK I just changed spark plugs on my 98 5.2.
I was thinking that the little washer thingy that came with each Autolite 3923 Platinum (all they had) was "optional"....Is this the case???
I was thinking that they were included to give two different options for how far in the plug goes into the cylinder...but now I'm thinking that they are actually a kind of "crush" washer for sealing.
thanks( and be kind )

Message: Thats exactly what they are. A crush washer and must be used.
The only time they are not used is with a tapered spark plug (they come without a washer).

Message: This is the first time I've had to change them, the ones I took out were Champions with the washers.
I measured from the base of the autolites to the electrode tip and it is about the same as the champions (from tip to washer)????
I would think that you would want the plug in the cylinder as far as possible, with out hitting valves or pistons, to get a better burn.
I dunno maybe I'm an idiot who overthinks things :-)

Message: The 3923 spark plugs are a heat range colder than the stock plugs. They're not going to go into the cylinder as far as the stock ones.
